2 Day FM announces new breakfast show with Dave Hughes, Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan
When news broke that they’re set to be direct radio competitors next year, Kyle Sandilands called Dave Hughes. Here’s what was said.
Dave Hughes has revealed what was said when his former arch-nemesis Kyle Sandilands called him out of the blue last week.
Hughesy and Kyle have feuded on and off over the years with Kyle even publicly threatening to punch Hughesy in the throat.
It was announced yesterday that Hughesy will be moving to Sydney soon to co-host 2 Day FM’s 2021 breakfast show alongside Ed Kavalee and Erin Molan.
That will make him a direct competitor to Kyle and Jackie O who host the number one FM breakfast show in Sydney.
“Out of the blue Kyle rang me the other day when the rumour (about the new 2 Day breakfast show) broke on your website,” Hughesy told news.com.au.
“Kyle rang me and I said, ‘Are you recording this conversation?’ He said, ‘No.’ He said that he’s looking forward to us being in Sydney. He’s not gonna hang sh*t on us.
“He said, ‘I’ve got professional respect for you and let’s hang out when you get here,’” Hughesy said.
KYLE VS HUGHESY
In 2017, Hughesy spoke about his feud with Kyle and how the two stars ended up burying the hatchet.
At the 2007 Logies, Hughesy brought up Kyle during a joke about how Anthony Callea had recently announced he was gay.
“What’s next?” Hughesy asked on stage, “Guy Sebastian’s going to reveal he’s got curly hair?
“Shannon Noll’s going to reveal he’s a bogan? Kyle Sandilands is going to reveal he’s a massive d**khead?”
The joke was lapped up by almost everyone at the Logies … apart from Kyle.
“He wasn’t happy afterwards,” Hughesy said on radio.
“I thought he might think it was funny, but he went on the Denton show and said this: ‘I used to be a fan of Dave Hughes but now I will punch him in throat when I see him next, it’s as simple as that.’”
Hughesy said on air in 2017: “We have mended those bridges now. At one point a few years ago he [Kyle] said, ‘I need to get rid of all my grudges’ and he sought me out to say, ‘Let’s forgive each other.’”
NEW 2DAY BREAKFAST SHOW
The 2 Day FM Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin Molan will launch on air on January 18, 2021.
The show will see Molan leave her role on the popular Sydney AM station 2GB.
“I love 2GB and I’ve had an incredible time,” Molan told news.com.au. “I love talk back and news, but I always felt I was better suited to the FM market and I love to have fun as well.
“I’m not saying that 2GB people are old, but at the young age of 37 I am really excited to be doing something a little bit different.”
Kavalee said the new breakfast show will feature a number of other regular guests.
“The idea of The Morning Crew is that you want to have a feel of us and friends of the show who can come in and join in as well,” he told news.com.au. “That’s why we decided on that name.”
TOUGHEST GIG IN RADIO
Hughesy, Kavalee and Molan will have their work cut out for them next year.
The 2 Day FM breakfast slot has been dubbed “the poisoned chalice” of radio ever since Kyle and Jackie O defected to KIIS FM at the end of 2013 and took the majority of their listeners with them.
2 Day FM then cycled through six different breakfast shows in six years, all of which failed to lift the station’s ratings.
The breakfast line-ups that have failed on 2 Day FM since 2014 are:
2014: Merrick Watts, Jules Lund and Sophie Monk with Mel Brown
2015: Dan Debuf and Maz Compton
2016: Rove McManus and Sam Frost
2017: Em Rusciano and Harley Breen
2018: Em Rusciano, Ed Kavalee and Grant Denyer
2019: Grant Denyer, Ed Kavalee and Ash London
The most recent breakfast show, Grant, Ed and Ash, was axed in August last year.
At the time, the head of the Hit Network, Gemma Fordham, told news.com.au: “I know there’s been a lot of shows and we’ve obviously got it wrong with each of our attempts, not through a lack of those people being talented on each occasion and not through a lack of people working their arses off,” she told news.com.au. “But ultimately we have to look at what the audience are telling us and where we see the opportunity.”
After that show was axed, 2 Day FM has been playing music in the breakfast slot ever since.
2 Day FM’s breakfast slot currently has a measly 3.5 per cent audience share. That’s a long way behind FM leaders Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS FM (10.7 per cent), Smooth FM’s Bogart and Glenn (8.5 per cent) and WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda (8.3 per cent).
