Paul Rudd’s hilarious 15-year prank on talk show host Conan O’Brien

Paul Rudd dropped by Conan O’Brien’s talk show to introduce a clip from his new Netflix series. Everybody knew what was coming next.

Paul Rudd's talk show troll

Paul Rudd has done it again.

This week, the Living with Yourself star revived a 15-year-old prank when he promised to show Conan O’Brien a clip from his new Netflix series … only to show a scene from the bizarre, badly reviewed Mac and Me, a 1988 kids’ movie about a wheelchair-using boy who befriends a tiny alien.

Rudd has been trolling O’Brien with the same move since 2005 when he was promoting The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but this time, he shook things up with a small (but noticeable) change. “After all these years, it was nice to see there was a little something different,” O’Brien said through laughs.

Rudd’s Conan spot began fairly normally, but O’Brien clearly knew what was coming. After discussing the plot of Netflix comedy Living with Yourself, which features double the Rudd (he plays two versions of himself), the actor explained that he brought a clip for O’Brien’s audience. “This is a clip of me coming to and trying to figure out what’s going on,” he teased. O’Brien’s knee began to shake, and he hesitantly encouraged his viewers to “take a look at this clip from Living with Yourself.”

Of course, it wasn’t a clip from Living with Yourself; it was a clip from 1988 sci-fi film Mac and Me. In the scene — the same one Rudd has shown O’Brien in place of Anchorman 2, the Friends finale, multiple Marvel films, and more — main character Eric (Jade Calegory) speeds down a hill in a wheelchair before accidentally launching himself into the water below. In the original movie, an alien pops up and reacts in shock, but in a nod to Living with Yourself, Rudd edited the clip to feature two E.T.-esque aliens.

“Now there’s two of them!” said O’Brien, fully aware that he’d been punked yet again.

“As you can see, you see a little bit of the cloning process happening in this,” replied Rudd. “Yes, yes,” said the host, breaking into a deep laugh. “After all these years, it was nice to see there was a little something different.”

Rudd went on to say that he brought a “real” clip of the Netflix series. Spoiler alert: it was more Mac and Me. “You don’t have time to watch Game of Thrones, but you have time to do that?” O’Brien said. “Well, it really wasn’t a long shoot,” joked Rudd.
