New Game of Thrones trailer played during Apple Watch event
A NEW Game of Thrones trailer has been released, and one character is clearly the star. What did we learn about the show’s new season?
THE new Game of Thrones trailer, released amid the fanfare of Apple’s big sermon this morning, is all about Daenerys.
When we last saw Dany at the end of season four, she was entrenched as the ruler of Meereen. Now her focus appears to be shifting towards Westeros and that pointy chair everyone’s so obsessed with.
The trailer opens with her listing her enemies in a menacing, dismissive tone.
“Lannister. Baratheon. Stark. Tyrell. They’re all just spokes on a wheel,” she says. “This one’s on top then that one’s on top, and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground. I’m not going to stop the wheel. I’m going to break the wheel.”
Breaking said metaphorical wheel will presumably require a lot of death. But later in the clip, as Dany relaxes in bed with Daario — yes, apparently they’re full-blown lovers now — she acts all holier than thou regarding the rebels in her own city.
Daario: “Clean this city out so the rats have nowhere left to hide.”
Daenerys: “I am a Queen, not a butcher.”
Daario: “All rulers are either butchers ... or meat.”
I’m beginning to think this Daario fellow is a bad, overly murderous influence on one of the few basically decent people in this show.
Meanwhile, Tyrion and his increasingly impressive beard are still en route to Essos. They’re getting close though, because the trailer shows Tyrion gazing up in awe at a temperamental dragon flying overhead. Wonder where that came from?
Another interesting titbit comes courtesy of Jon Snow, who is shamelessly optimistic as always.
“Winter is coming. We know what’s coming with it,” he says. “We can learn to live with the wildlings, or we can add them to the army of the dead.”
It would appear that Jon is trying to convince his mates in the Night’s Watch to join forces with the wildlings who just tried to murder each and every one of them. This is necessary because of those ice zombies on the other side of the Wall, who are (very slowly) implementing some vaguely nefarious plan.
We’re also introduced to veteran actor Jonathan Pryce’s new character, a rather dishevelled man called High Sparrow who apparently likes to lecture people about the gods. Don’t know much more about him yet.
The trailer closes with Dany trying to create a nice mother-son moment with one of her dragons, which refuses to cooperate and flies away in a huff. Damn kids.
Season five starts on April 12.
