Musician Tex Perkins uses one of Scott Morrison’s favourite songs to ridicule the PM on ABC

A “brutal” update to Tex Perkins shouting “This one’s for the PM” before giving him the finger during a live NYE broadcast has emerged.

PM given the finger on ABC coverage

What could be worse than being called out by an iconic Australian rock star on national television? A musician mockingly dedicating to you one of your favourite songs.

During the ABC’s live New Year’s Eve coverage, Tex Perkins did just that to Scott Morrison.

He waved his middle finger in the air and shouted: “This one’s for the Prime Minister.”

He was hammering home his disgust at the PM’s alleged lack of action on climate change and leadership as wildfires lash large parts of the country.

The jubilant crowd’s reaction would be painful enough, but Perkins’ aptly chosen song “The Honeymoon Is Over”, which he released as a member of the band The Cruel Sea, features on Mr Morrison’s Spotify playlist titled “How good is Oz Rock! (ScoMo’s Classics)”

As the camera panned across Sydney Harbour and then onto the live concert, Perkins could be seen sticking his middle finger up in the direction of Kirribilli House, the secondary residence of the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison.

But the 90s classic might be echoing back over the Sydney Harbour sometime soon.

“Tex is still high up in the prime minister’s playlist,” Scott Morrison’s spokesperson told news.com.au.

The singer-songwriter didn’t appear to face any consequences over the stunt, as he returned to the ABC stage about an hour later to perform Skyhooks hit “Living in the ‘70s.”

Viewers were divided over the crude gesture, with some saying it was disrespectful, and that it was unnecessary to make the night political.

Others said it adequately expressed the frustration many feel with Australia’s leadership as the Sydney fireworks celebration went on while parts of the country were ravaged by bushfire.

Scott Morrison and local leaders including Sydney Mayor Clover Moore have been heavily criticised for going ahead with the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display as parts of the country have been decimated by unprecedented bushfires that have killed three people in the last 24 hours.
