A MELBOURNE truck driver who earned plenty of laughs while fishing in heavy floodwaters has joked he’ll run for prime minister now that he’s “so famous”.

A video surfaced yesterday of Paris Jordanou at York St bridge, laughing and yelling “No, no, no — I’ll catch him!” as he threw a fishing line toward a car, which was floating after driving into floodwaters.

Speaking on Today this morning, the 25-year-old revealed he had been having a coffee with a friend when they decided to check out the damage at the underpass.

He says he couldn’t believe the driver had attempted to get through the deep water.

“We arrived just shortly after the first car went in and so I wasn’t expecting another one to go in, especially since coppers had blocked it off,” he said.

“But they [police] had run off to book someone trying to film it on their mobile so the other car has come in and I was already ready with a fishing pole just being a larrikin with my mates.”

He added that since the video came out, he’s been hailed as a hero.

“I’ve had people ask me if I want to be Australian of the Year, or Prime Minister,” he said.

The interview took a slightly awkward turn when fill-in hosts Tom Steinfort and Sylvia Jeffreys began commenting on Jordanou’s physique.

“With those guns Paris, I reckon you could have pulled down the bridge behind you with your fishing rod,” Jeffreys joked, before asking him to do a “full body” flex for the camera.

Steinfort added: “Have you done a few bicep curls just with the chesty Bonds there before you jumped on this morning?”

Luckily, Jordanou was happy to poke fun at himself, admitting he had done “a couple of push-ups before the interview”.

He wrapped up the chat with a heartfelt thank-you for all the public’s support and praise, before imitating Kanye West’s infamous presidential announcement and promising in 2020 he’ll be “running for prime minister”.
