The real reason Sia always hides her face
SHE’S been hiding her face for years, and on Sunrise this morning, Sia told us why she chooses to don the wig — all while wearing a bizarre costume.
SHE’S been hiding her face for years, but Sia’s outfit on Sunrise this morning was one of her most bizarre yet.
The Aussie singer/songwriter performed her hit single Chandelier live in the studio wearing an outlandish piñata costume designed by Romance Was Born. The multicoloured tinsel headpiece partly concealed her face, while the Japanese-inspired Kimono gown covered her from head to toe.
When asked by co-host Samantha Armytage why she still shuns the spotlight and chooses to wear a wig in public, Sia’s response was simple. “Because it’s ugly, it makes me feel hunted.
“You feel like prey and they’re the predator and you’re being hunted ... You go into fight or flight.
“Would you like to spend your life feeling like prey? Probably not.”
Describing celebrity attention as “unpleasant”, the notoriously camera-shy star said she only ever wanted a “regular life” while doing what she loves — making music.
“It’s just like wanting to have a regular life just like a regular person and still be able to make music and sing ... but without having to sacrifice just having a regular life, that’s all.”
Kochie remarked after Sia left the stage for the first time, “She’s stunning!”
The Grammy-nominated artist returned to the stage shortly afterwards to perform her recent single Big GirlsCry, dressed this time by Josh Goot and Carla Zampatti. Her iconic blonde wig also made an appearance.
“I look forward to looking deeply into your eyes without being filmed,” Sia told Armytage, wrapping up her only Australian TV performance while she’s in town.
Sia also spoke to 2DayFM’s Dan & Maz and revealed her style plans for after the infamous blonde bob.
“As I had hoped and planned it’s the blonde bob that has become iconic over time,” she told the radio duo.
“It’s going to evolve. The next album is called This Is Acting and we’re going to do prosthetics, so we’re going to altar my face just slightly so you can’t really tell if I’ve had a little bit of surgery.
“I’m not going to do any kind of, like, wacky stuff, I’m still going to look like a human being from this planet,” she assured the pair.
The 39-year-old musician is constantly asked why she chooses to cover up. She addressed the topic after dropping her music video for Chandelier, which stars 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler.
“I don’t want to be famous, or recognisable,” she told Chris Connelly on Nightline in June 2014. “I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the internet. I’ve been writing pop songs for pop stars now for a couple of years and I’ve become friends with them and see what their life is like and that’s not something I want.
“If anyone besides famous people knew what it was like to be a famous person, they would never want to be famous.
“I was at Target the other day buying a hose and nobody recognised me and my song was on the radio. And I thought, ‘Okay, this experiment is working’.”
