Sunrise criticized for panel discussion over Australia's white settlement

INDIGENOUS Australian singer Thelma Plum has blasted Sunrise as “a bunch of racist c**ts” over a segment that debated the University of NSW’s guidelines for talking about Australia’s history.

Radio host Alan Jones and Herald Sun columnist Rita Panahi were invited on the show yesterday to debate the “language toolkit”, which teaches students that Captain James Cook “invaded” Australia in 1788, rather than “settled” or “discovered”.

Plum took to Facebook, questioning why the program didn’t include someone of Indigenous heritage in the debate. But not before she challenged Jones to a “duel”.

“Yo Alan, I think you’re a count (sic) and I challenge you to a duel,” she began. The post included a photo of Jones standing in front of a banner with the word “count” on it, Jones unknowingly blocking the “o”.

“This post is in relation to a segment Sunrise had on their show talking about how Aus Uni’s are now being taught it’s offensive say ‘Captain Cook discovered Aus’ and it should in fact be that he ‘invaded Australia’.

“F**king A that guy invaded Australia and @sunriseon7 if you want to have an actual real discussion about racism, how about not getting three white people (Alan Jones being one of them) to weigh in and decide if it is or not.”

She pointed fans towards the clip of the segment that aired on the show before continuing.

“@sunriseon7 I think you’re a bunch of racist c**ts and you should 100% be ashamed of yourselves adding to the issue of thinking Aboriginal people don’t have a voice. Let us decide if it’s racist of not, not some Becky and Alan Jones.”

When host Edwina Bartholomew asked Jones during the segment if he conceded the terminology can be offensive to Indigenous Australians, he disagreed.

“I think this is exactly what John Howard was talking about when he talked about the black arm band view of history,” he said. “And quite frankly, many of the academic environments in this country are being overtaken by the left.

“At the end of the day, when Cook discovered as he did Australia, what that means, in a strict sense of the word, is he discovered ways in which to turn this continent in a way which would be beneficial and profitable to everyone. And we would hope that, in an Australia of tomorrow, as in Australia of yesterday, the discovery of Australia brought very significant wealth. It opened up the country and everybody, including Indigenous Australians, have been beneficiaries of that.”
