Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac’s funny defence of viral poodle clip

Sam Mac has issued a hilarious defence of his viral segment after his broadcast was compared to an ABC bulletin being filmed metres away.

Sam Mac hilariously defends viral TikTok

The old saying goes you can’t please everyone, but that didn’t stop beloved weatherman Sam Mac, who hilariously hit back at criticism of a “poodle party” skit during his broadcast this week.

Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast were broadcasting weather updates from the same spot in Sydney on Friday morning, but the fashion in which they communicated the incoming storms to their audiences differed greatly.

While ABC journalist Mahnaz Angury gave a serious update directly into the camera, Mac showed a poodle on a scooter before delivering the latest on what viewers could expect.

Mac made light of the vast juxtaposition in style in a funny 15 second clip he uploaded to TikTok later that morning.

“When two weather crews book the same location,” he wrote.

“Shout out to Mahnaz Angury who was a champ.”

The viral video quickly massed nearly 750,000 views and garnered a positive reaction from people in and outside of the media industry.

But not everyone was amused, with one Twitter user saying Mac was “wasting his life”.

“Imagine wasting your life doing this for your ‘profession’ … @MrSamMac. FMD,” they tweeted.

But Mac took the biting criticism in his stride and delivered a humorous rebuttal.

“Wasting my life? Quite the contrary … This is my legacy,” he joked.

“I’ve dedicated my career to providing a platform for more scooter riding poodles #Proud.”

ABC Breakfast News producer Lucy Carter also came to Mac’s defence.

“Personally I reckon Sam Mac is one of the best in the business. There are different ways to do things – not a right/wrong binary,” she tweeted.

Mac expressed his appreciation for the support, while admitting he didn’t know the clip had caused such a stir.

“Thanks Lucy! It actually amuses me how worked up some people can get over a fun 15 second video … featuring a Poodle riding a scooter,” he said.
