Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac announces engagement to Rebecca James
Just weeks after announcing he was taking a break from his high-profile breakfast TV gig, Seven’s Sam Mac has shared another major update.
Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac is engaged to his partner of three years, Rebecca James.
The Seven presenter, 42, took to Instagram to share the exciting news on Saturday, posting a picture of himself beaming alongside his bride-to-be as she flashed her diamond ring.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my fiancé (sic)! She said yes,” Mac wrote in the caption.
“My secret 2023 New Year’s resolution was to propose to my darling Rebecca sometime this year. So I guess this is what you’d call a buzzer-beater.
“She’s calm, strong and unintentionally funny. She’s super smart and a genuine knockout beauty. She makes me a better man.
“Earlier this morning in front of her parents and brother … I told her I’m in love with every version of her and asked her to be mine forever, she said yes.
“There were tears, laughter and a Ghillie suit … but that’s a story for another day.
“It’s only been eight hours, but I’ve already referred to her as MY FIANCÉ (sic) 74 times.
“It’s loud, proud, and borderline obnoxious, but it feels right. Thank you @rebeccajames_stylist for bringing the magic to my life, now let’s plan a wedding!”
The couple, who were initially just friends, began dating in 2020 during the pandemic and went public with their relationship in March 2021.
“This is Bec. We were introduced on insta last year via our mutual friend,” Mac wrote on Instagram at the time, before explaining that his new girlfriend was in Melbourne and he was in Sydney, meaning they’d been heavily impacted by covid-related border restrictions.
“Here’s where it gets cool,” he continued. “We very quickly struck up a great friendship. Insta chats, phone calls, Friday zoom drinks, we spoke every single day for almost 6 months! So when restrictions eased late last year, we could finally meet in person.
“By this stage, I felt like I knew everything about her … except if she was interested in being more than friends.”
Luckily for them both, their virtual chemistry translated across into real life.
“She makes me so happy & I’m absolutely delighted to share her with you guys,” Mac wrote.
James soon relocated to Sydney, and the couple welcomed their first child, Margot, late last year.
In November, Mac announced that he would take a break from his gruelling breakfast TV role to focus on raising his daughter while James, a stylist, returned to the workforce.
“She’s been thinking about it for the past few months and now that Margot is over a year old she’s ready to properly get back into the workforce,” Mac told 7 Life.
“It’s my turn to be getting Margot up, feed her and basically becoming her personal assistant /servant.
“She’s walking now, which is awesome but it’s a bit daunting because we have to childproof the house … but really exciting times.
“Margot’s changed so much even in the past couple of months. So it’s super-exciting to have some proper quality time with her.”
