Sunrise left scrambling after Kelly Clarkson pulls the pin on live appearance
SUNRISE producers were forced to work around the clock overnight after a global megastar cancelled her live studio performance at the last minute.
UPDATE: Kelly Clarkson’s performance at The Star in Sydney scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.
The US singer’s management revealed this morning that she is suffering from acute viral laryngitis and is unable to perform.
Clarkson released a statement to fans: “Despite resting and taking advice from the doctors, I have not been able to make enough steps in my recovery that would allow me to sing tonight. I’m so sorry to all my fans that have purchased tickets for my show tonight.
“I’m so bummed that I can’t sing for you after having such a great week back here in Australia; I hope I can make it up to you soon!”
Sunrise producers worked around the clock Wednesday night after Clarkson pulled the pin on her major studio appearance at the last minute.
She was due to perform three songs live on Sunrise on Thursday morning across several segments, but cancelled after losing her voice during a Nova Red Room show.
Clarkson apologised to fans via Facebook: “I am so sorry to all my fans about not being able to perform on Sunrise this morning. I have no voice and the last thing I want to do is let anyone down. If I could be there and able to sing, I would.”
The Sunrise team had to reshuffle their entire show, replacing six segments overnight, which included beefing up their coverage of Prince Harry’s final day in Australia.
The 33-year-old former Idol winner was also due to meet two 11-year-old competition winners on the show, personally chosen by Clarkson herself.
Sunrise EP Michael Pell told news.com.au that there were no hard feelings, despite the late notice. “We wish Kelly a speedy recovery. Health comes first. She’s a long term friend of Sunrise and I know the last thing she would ever want to do is disappoint anyone. She’s welcome back any time.”
Clarkson performed on Sunrise four years ago in front of thousands of fans and this morning would have been her only TV performance while in the country.
The Stronger singer landed Down Under on Sunday and is on a whirlwind promotional tour, here with her husband, talent manager Brandon Blackstock, and their 11-month-old daughter River.
On Wednesday she featured on both Kyle and Jackie O’s KIIS FM radio show and NOVA FM, even singing her songs in a foreign language for Smallzy’s Surgery. She then performed an intimate seven song gig for Nova fans in their Red Room.
“It was only minutes after that gig that Kelly lost her voice and was forced to make the upsetting decision to pull out of her Sunrise performance,” Kochie explained Thursday morning.
Fans in attendance at Nova’s Red Room commented on social media today that the singer seemed to be losing her voice while performing at the gig.

The rest of the Grammy Award-winner’s promo tour is now in doubt, while tickets to her Friday night show at The Star will all be fully refunded.
