Peter Stefanovic’s ‘shame’ over Today’s mass clear-out

Pete Stefanovic says Nine’s brutal Today clear-out — which saw his brother and wife axed too — felt like GoT’s infamous “Red Wedding”.

Former Nine star Peter Stefanovic has opened up about the network’s dramatic “clearing of the decks” at the Today show in a candid new interview with Kyle and Jackie O.

Dubbed the “troublemaking brother” of the Stefanovics by Kyle Sandilands, Peter copped quite the introduction:

“I still to this day think it’s terrible they wiped out the entire news team at the Today show … because of you,” the shock jock said.

He was, of course, referring to “UberGate”, Peter’s infamous speakerphone conversation with brother Karl from the back of an Uber in March 2018. The brothers were allegedly venting about Karl’s Today co-host Georgie Gardner in the loose-lipped convo — and by the end of the year, both brothers and Peter’s wife Sylvia Jeffreys had been taken off Today, with only Gardner remaining.

Peter took the accusation he’d caused the mass sackings with good humour: “You’re probably right,” he chuckled.

“You must’ve copped some sh*t. Your brother went. Your wife went. You went. Fifteen years of your life …” Sandilands said.

“(Sports reporter) Timmy Gilbert too. Someone likened it to the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones, and it was probably pretty close to it,” said Peter, referencing that show’s most infamously violent scene.

Sandilands suggested Peter should've atoned for his sins by parading “through the Channel 9 carpark nude while everyone throws faeces at you yelling shame, shame”.

Peter said that wouldn’t be necessary — he already felt “all the shame”.

The former Nine reporter has since taken on a new role with Sky News, co-anchoring the channel’s flagship breakfast news program.

That provided an opportunity for more ribbing from Kyle and Jackie O.

“You’ve landed on your feet — not so much your wife or your brother — but you’ve landed on your feet over at Sky News …” Sandilands said. “Did Sylvia blame you?”

“No. She’s happy. Everyone’s on their feet,” Peter insisted.

He said his brother — whose most recent appearance on Nine was being mercilessly roasted throughout last month’s Logie Awards ceremony — was “going to be fine”.

“He cares about his work, and he’s great at his work, and Sylvia’s great at her work. They’re both great journalists,” Peter said.

Peter will next host Lawyer X: The Untold Story, an exclusive two-part documentary for Sky News on Foxtel, which will air over two nights on Monday July 22 and Tuesday July 23.
