Peter Stefanovic’s new gig as newsreader on Weekend Today

PETE Stefanovic has picked up a matching job to his girlfriend Sylvia Jeffreys, but that doesn’t mean he has aspirations to one day work alongside brother Karl.

PETE Stefanovic has picked up a matching job to his girlfriend Sylvia Jeffreys, landing a permanent newsreader role on Weekend Today.

Stefanovic, brother of Today host Karl, is filling in for Wendy Kingston while she is on maternity leave and anticipates he will be warming her seat for between four and six months.

The 32-year-old has been dating Jeffreys, who reads the news on the weekday edition of the breakfast show, since December 2013.

“I pretty much take the baton from her on Fridays and pass the baton back to her on the end at the end of the weekend,” he said of his new gig.

Peter Stefanovic and Sylvia Jeffreys both have newsreading roles on Nine breakfast shows.

Stefanovic returned home in February this year after an eight year stint overseas as Nine’s Europe, Africa and Middle East correspondent.

While he misses the adrenalin rush of being live at the scene of breaking international news, he’s looking forward to a different sort of thrill and some great banter on the Weekend Today set.

But that doesn’t mean he has aspirations to one day work alongside Karl on the weekday edition.

“I don’t know about that,” he said of sharing the desk with Karl. “That might be too far. I’m definitely not smart or witty enough to work alongside Karl, he’d eat me up for breakfast.

“He’s a legend of the industry, my best friend and I have learned more from him than anyone.”

Stefanovic will continue to be a contributor to 60 Minutes, as well as work regular news shifts through the week on top of his Weekend Today commitments.

He starts the new role this weekend.
