OITNB star’s shocking past: ‘I spent the first four years of my life in a cage’
KATE Mulgrew, who plays Red in Netflix hit Orange Is The New Black, has revealed disturbing details about her early life.
ORANGE Is The New Black star Kate Mulgrew, who plays Red in the hit show, has revealed bizarre details of her early life in a new interview.
The 61-year-old actor appeared on UK chat show Lorraine and shared strange details of her Iowa upbringing.
Mulgrew was there to discuss her new memoir, Born With Teeth — and as it turns out, the title is 100 per cent true.
“I was born with a set of perfect little teeth. They’re actually sort of pearlescent, and they’re very dangerous because the baby can swallow them,” she told the host, Lorraine Kelly, who could barely contain her disbelief.
“So [her mother] had a guy come and take my teeth out, and then they built me a cage, because I had no sense of pain until I was four years old,” she continued.
“Born with teeth and no sense of pain — Shakespeare would’ve had a field day. It’s a witch! That’s what a witch is.”
Lorraine suggested she would’ve been tried as a witch had she been born in the Middle Ages.
“That’s probably where I belong.”
Mulgrew plays fiery prison cook Galina “Red” Reznikov in Netflix’s hit series Orange Is The New Black, which will debut its fourth season on the streaming service later this month. She admitted the show had played a big part in the current binging consumption of television.
“Binging seems to be in our nature. We love to binge,” she said.
“It’s sort of like when you fall in love — I mean, you really don’t want to be disciplined about falling in love, do you? You want them to call, to kiss, you want it all now!”
