The 37-year-old described the interview as “awkward” after the world number one wore just a bra under an open black suit jacket.

“It did get awkward... unintentionally,” Maddern warned viewers before the program aired the interview this morning.

Williams, who is the face for lingerie label Berlei, spoke about her love of Australia much to the distraction of the blonde reporter.

“I love Australian crowds,” she said.

“It’s probably the only reason I won the fifth time was because of the Aussie crowd.”

Then came the awkward chat about her role with Berlei.

“I’m clearly not wearing a bra,” Maddern said desperately trying to explain herself.

“Well, ah, I’m wearing a bra but not a sports one.”

As the camera went back to the live studio, Maddern said: “Just to clarify I was wearing a bra.”

“It’s awkward sitting there with someone wearing a bra.”
