Lisa Curry in tears over daughter Jaimi Kenny’s death on The Morning Show
Lisa Curry has made an emotional appearance on The Morning Show, opening up about her deep heartbreak following her daughter Jaimi’s tragic death last year.
Former Olympian Lisa Curry has made an emotional appearance on The Morning Show, instantly breaking down in tears as she was asked about the loss of her daughter Jaimi, who died after battling an eating disorder last year.
Jaimi, the first born to Curry and former Ironman Grant Kenny, was just 33 years old when she died in hospital in September 2020, with Lisa sharing her immense heartbreak with followers on social media over the past 15 months.
Speaking on Channel 7’s The Morning Show this morning, Lisa sobbed as she began to describe the pain of the past year.
“You have been on the thoughts and every one of our fans and followers,” host Kylie Gillies began as Lisa buckled over in tears and apologised for not being able to speak.
“You have been open about the toll the past 15 months has taken on your health, so many people out there including other mums can relate to how you are feeling,” said Kylie.
“Sorry,” Lisa repeated as she began to well up and husband Mark Tabone appeared next to her on the green screen.
“Sorry, hang on. The reason why you haven’t sent anything is because I can’t because this happens,” she said as she wiped her eyes.
“It has been really hard and people have been really supportive.
“I think what I have learnt most is that every second person walking along the street is going through the same thing, so it’s really important to be empathetic of people and be kind to people and just know that people are walking around, feeling like this all the time but people don’t know about it. So yeah, it’s very difficult.”
The 59-year-old, who is also mother to model Jett Kenny and Morgan Gruell — who announced her third pregnancy last month — went on to say that her family has helped her through the difficult time, especially grandsons Flynn and Taj who have been “keeping her occupied”.
“Morgan is pregnant again, which is beautiful,” she said.
“And Jett is really good, he is doing lots of great things and grant is good, except is struggling a lot as well and Mark has been amazing, as usual. We just had Morgan’s 31st birthday party two nights ago so that was a fun night, good to have a good night out have a good laugh,” she added.
Morgan welcomed her second child with her husband last year, just weeks after the death of her big sister in November 2020.
Marking the first anniversary of Jaimi’s death in September, the former professional swimmer took to social media, posting a video with photos of Jaimi throughout her life to the tune of Alexandra Burke’s cover of Hallelujah.
Curry said she would never have thought her life would be how it was now and still remembers the “gut-wrenching, heartbreaking moment” her family had to say goodbye.
“Grant and I feel broken. I’ve lost myself. But each day I try to continue on, one step at a time to get things done, to continue being a mother, a granny, a wife, a friend, a business owner … at times distracting myself so much that I can’t think of anything,” she posted.
“But then the quiet times come and everything comes flooding back, every feeling, every memory and I feel like I’m drowning in the pain.
“Today, at 7.10am, as she took her last breath a year ago, we honoured Jaimi by being at her favourite beach to lay flowers into the ocean.
“I hope that wherever she is – above, or at arms length in spirit energy she can still see and feel the love.
“Remembering you always our beautiful girl.”
The family released a public statement after Jaimi’s death, saying she had lost her battle with a long-term illness and died peacefully in hospital.
Jaimi reportedly battled alcoholism and an eating disorder.
In July, Lisa was hospitalised for five days with severe pain she described as like “a wide squeezing band about my chest and back” due to grief.
She told Instagram followers that multiple tests were unable to find the cause of the pain and “everyone is stumped. But you can’t test for heartache”.
