Kochie was left red faced on Sunrise in a clip emerging this week when an attempt at lighthearted banter with a competition winner went awry.

In a snippet doing the rounds on Twitter, Kochie and co-host Nat Barr are seen interacting with the winner of a cruise, Christine Linn, from SA.

“How would you like to go cruisin’!” an enthusiastic Kochie began before instructing Christine to go to her front door to be filmed.

Appearing in a Hawaiian Lei with a tropical cocktail in hand, Christine was thrilled to receive the prize.

“Tell us who you’re going to take?” Barr excitedly asked the winner.

But the segment took a turn when Christine revealed she’d be taking her husband, prompting Kochie to ask, “Why?” in peels of laughter.

“Um. He’s got terminal cancer,” Christine replied as the hosts’ animated expressions instantly fell.

It’s been an emotional week for Kochie.

On Tuesday morning, the veteran TV personality celebrated 20 years on the popular morning show, fighting back tears as he thanked all those he’d worked with over the past two decades.

“Beretts, Nat, Eddy and Dave Walters, who has been in our ear for 20 years as part of the team, I’m so very grateful,” he said.

“Thank you for having me for 20 years.”

Koch first joined the show in 2002 as a temporary replacement.

He revealed in December last year that he had a year left in his contract, but said he would stay on the show for however long he enjoyed it.
