‘Just plain gutless’: Aussie Twitter users slam online trolls for sickening Lisa Millar comments

A well-known media personality has once again fallen victim to abhorrent social media trolls who this time callously targeted her for her outfit.

Australians have slammed the behaviour of online trolls who have ruthlessly targeted a well-known media personality yet again – this time for her on-air wardrobe.

ABC News Breakfast host Lisa Millar was abused in a torrent of vile tweets on Monday over a mint-coloured skirt she was wearing while presenting the show.

It’s the latest incident in a spate of sickening online attacks singling out the journalist which forced her to deactivate her popular Twitter account in September 2021.

The sickening tweets – most of which are too inappropriate to publish – have sparked outrage online as appalled Twitter users call for them to be taken down.

The ABC director of news Justin Stevens said: “The relentless and vile bullying Lisa Millar is subjected to on social media, particularly Twitter, is unacceptable. She is an outstanding broadcaster and journalist and does an incredible job.”

The “disgusting” tweets have resulted in Millar’s name trending online, but not all posts are negative, with many media personalities and everyday Australians coming to her defence.

Investigative journalist Tom Ravlic called on those attacking the ABC host to get “a new hobby”.

“I can recommend buying a LEGO set and building it,” he said.

“The time they spend crafting Twitter posts in personalities could be used to go online shopping.”

Meanwhile 15-year-old journalist Leo Puglisi was among one of the younger social media users to call out the abhorrent behaviour, reposting some comments alongside the caption “cannot blame Lisa Millar for leaving Twitter”.

Others labelled the comments as “reprehensible”, misogynistic” and “just plain gutless”, while one everyday Australian said: “If you follow me and think that comments on Lisa Millar’s appearance are acceptable because you don’t like her politics or journalism, then unfollow me now please”.

The fact the comments were made as International Women’s Day approaches also appalled some Twitter users.

“Yesterday it was Julie Bishop, today Lisa Millar. I’m not a fan of either women, but can we please stop shaming women because of their looks and what they wear,” Auspol TikTok Queen Belinduh Pyne, also known as Belinda Davey, tweeted.

“We’ve all had a wardrobe malfunction in our lives, embarrassing enough to have it on live television. Be nicer!”

A Melbourne mother also posted: “I’m a couple of years older than Lisa Millar and I show off a LOT more flesh than she ever does”.

“She has a great figure – she can dress however the hell she wants – stop being such prudish conservatives. Save your judgment for her journalism.”

Millar returned to the set on Tuesday morning alongside co-host Michael Rowland wearing a green long-sleeve blouse and black slacks.
