Zac Efron made a statement when he showed up to Wednesday’s episode of the Today show wearing sunglasses to promote his new movie, The Iron Claw.

And instead of ignoring the fashion choice, co-host Craig Melvin addressed it, saying, “Zac Efron is a legitimate bona fide Hollywood superstar but that is not the reason he is in shades right now.”

“No, I’m sorry man,” the High School Musical star — who was accompanied by his co-stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons — replied. “I feel weird being in shades.”

“I just have a bit of an eye infection,” he continued. “But I really wanted to be here. It’s such a good movie, and I want to come see you guys and tell everyone about it.”

However, this is not the first time the actor’s appearance has caused a stir.

In 2021, a clip of an unrecognisable Efron caught the attention of fans, who speculated whether the 17 Again star had undergone cosmetic surgery.

“What in hell did Zac Efron do to his jaw?” tweeted one observer, with another account adding, “There’s a pic of Zac Efron with terrible Botox and jaw fillers circulating on Twitter.”

Another user commented that he looked like “human Shrek” from the second instalment of the animated movie.

Efron was then forced to address his changed visage in an October 2022 Men’s Health cover story.

He told the magazine that he had shattered his jaw after slipping in his home and smacking his chin against the granite corner of a fountain. After coming to, he found his chin bone hanging off his face.

The 17 Again star explained that his “masseters just grew” and “got really, really big” after physical therapy.

But that was not the first time that the seemingly accident-prone Efron had broken his jaw.

In 2013, he broke his jaw — again at home — after allegedly slipping in a puddle of water and crashing face-first onto the floor.

The Iron Claw, is based on the true story of the Von Erich brothers, who made history in the world of professional wrestling during the 1980s. It comes out in Australian cinemas on January 18.
