Today have shared a first look at what to expect from Karl Stefanovic – including a nod to his chequered history with the show.

First look of 2020 Today Show

Nine have today teased the first look at Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon hosting The Today Show in 2020.

The pair will take over hosting duties for Nine’s ailing morning show from Monday, January 6, and both promise viewers they’re planning “a bit of fun”.

A short teaser video released today begins with a voiceover highlighting the pair’s serious news credentials – before they appear on camera insisting they’ll also keep the show light and fun.

“With over four decades in news between them, Karl and Ally have experienced it all. On Monday, Jan 6, they come together to bring you Australia’s best breakfast news,” the voiceover announces.

“We can’t wait to tell you all the news, all the important stuff of the day, but send you off with a laugh,” says Stefanovic, who will return to hosting duties a little over a year after being dramatically ousted from Today in December 2018.

“We just provide a bit of fun, but you know that when the big stories break, we’ve got it covered,” says Langdon. “See you then, bright and early! Remember how to set your alarm, Karl?”

“Not really,” says Stefanovic with a laugh.

Stefanovic and Langdon will be joined on the desk by Perth reporter Tracy Vo in the newsreader role and former Sunday Night journalist Alex Cullen covering sport.

And Nine no doubt hope viewers warm to the new line-up after what has been a nightmare year for Today, which suffered plummeting ratings throughout 2019.

Media analyst Steve Allen told news.com.au this month that the chances of Today winning the breakfast ratings war and wrestling the number one spot from Channel 7’s smash hit Sunrise were nil.

“I think (Channel 9 boss) Hugh Marks and his executive team would be looking at this realistically,” he said.

“In the next year, if they can halve that deficit between Today and Sunrise, that would be a fantastic outcome. That’s my thinking. They just need to see that huge gap narrow,” Mr Allen said.

Stefanovic said he was “shocked” to be chosen to host Today once more when the decision was announced last month, with his former co-host Georgie Gardner and her co-host Deb Knight unceremoniously dumped.

“I thought my time was up, but then, when I was sounded out about it, it got me thinking,” Stefanovic said of his surprise return, calling it a “big job with enormous pressures” … “but also without question the best live TV job in Australia”.

“I am as shocked about this as everyone else,” he said.
