Brooke Boney’s Today show replacement revealed as TV presenter set to move overseas
With Brooke Boney set to bow out of the Today show in coming weeks, Channel 9 have officially locked in her replacement.
Brooke Boney’s replacement on Channel 9’s Today show has been revealed.
The TV presenter, who took over as the program’s showbiz reporter in 2019 before shifting to news presenter in January 2023, announced on-air in March she was quitting to pursue a university degree in the UK.
Current Weekend Today co-host Jayne Azzopardi will move to weekdays to cover the news round for Today, while celebrity interviewer Renee Bargh will have a boosted role with the breakfast show alongside showbiz veteran Richard Wilkins, with hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo rounding out the line-up.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jayne Azzopardi, one of Nine’s most accomplished journalists, to Today in the news chair,” Nine’s director of morning television Steven Burling said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Jayne has covered politics in Canberra, reported on major news events, and co-hosted Weekend Today.
“Joining her is Renee Bargh, known for her career at Channel [V] and as a correspondent for EXTRA in LA, to cover the entertainment round alongside Dickie.
“We’re privileged to have Jayne and Renee join our team at Today.”
Azzopardi took over as Weekend Today co-host alongside Clint Stanaway in April last year. Their appointments followed the departure of Belinda Russell and Charles Croucher, the latter of whom was promoted to take over from Chris Uhlmann as the network’s political editor.
Meanwhile, Boney has taken up the opportunity to study at Oxford University after the Olympics, which is being broadcast on Nine from July 26 until August 11.
“I’ve been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I’ll be leaving the show after the Olympics,” Boney said on-air in March.
“I don’t want to go into too much right now, because there’ll be plenty of time for goodbyes and thank youse, but I just wanted to share that good slash bad news with you all this morning.
“It’s been a dream of mine to be able to study at an overseas university, and it just felt like the right time to take that step.”
Channel 9 is yet to announce when Boney’s final day on-air will be.
Meanwhile, a host of the network’s top talent are heading over to Paris to cover the 2024 Olympics, which will be broadcast 24/7 across multiple channels.
