Bizarre twist in case of ‘secret Stefanovic tape’

THE saga of an Uber driver trying to sell a recording of a late-night convo between the Stefanovic brothers took an even weirder turn.

THERE’S been a bizarre new twist in the case of the Peter and Karl Stefanovic secret tape — apparently, the tape doesn’t actually exist.

Instead, the rumoured frank late night conversation Peter Stefanovic had in the back of an Uber with his brother Karl on speakerphone — including alleged “bitching and moaning” and discussion of Today co-host Georgie Gardner — lives on only in the as-yet-anonymous Uber driver’s memory.

So says entertainment reporter Peter Ford, who claimed during an on-air segment on 3AW today that New Idea magazine would be running explosive new details from the story in their next issue, out Monday.

“New Idea have got the Stefanovic tapes — now, what they’re saying in the story is there are no tapes. The driver in the car says he’s remembered all the details of the conversation. He must have an extraordinary memory,” said Ford, who alleged that the new details could potentially damage the brothers’ working relationships with several of their Nine colleagues.

“It is going to be highly embarrassing for both the Stefanovic brothers as of next week when this magazine is on the shelves, because they give serves to not only on air talent including Richard Wilkins and Georgie Gardner but to a number of executives at the Channel Nine Network.”

Breaking the story on the Kyle and Jackie O show earlier this week, Ford said the driver had recorded the conversation and claimed he’d “had the phone call transcribed” to him, insisting its contents were “not earth shattering”.

“They talked about jobs, about life, a bit of bitching and a bit of moaning. But I think most people would think, there but for the grace of God go I,” he said.

“I don’t know that it would destroy [Karl and Georgie’s partnership], but it certainly would cause ... it’s an unusual relationship between those two anyway, you just wouldn’t want any grenade thrown into the mix.”
