Michael Gudinski spoke about death, life and his plans for the future in one of his last in-depth interviews before his sudden death at 68.

Michael Gudinski’s star-studded funeral

In one of the last in-depth interviews Michael Gudinski gave, he talked about death being “a while” off, as he opened up about his children one day continuing his legacy.

The godfather of Australian music, who was one of the country’s most influential music identities as the founder of Mushroom Records, died suddenly on March 2, aged 68. He was survived by his wife Sue, daughter Kate and son Matt, and two grandchildren.

In a 2018 interview with journalist Mike Munro, which aired on Foxtel Arts tonight, Gudinski reflected on his wonderful career before making an eerie comment about his future.

“I’ve had a pretty lucky life and a lot of good fun. I think too many Australians don’t realise what we have got here,” Gudinski, who was born to Russian immigrants, told Munro.

“I’ll never forget before the old man passed, and he said to me: ‘Never go to the old country [Russia]’, and I never have, and I hear it’s beautiful; that’s not the point.

“I think there’s so many people of my generation that came out here and put their foot on the ground and brought their children up, and I’m lucky enough to have a couple of healthy good kids and one of them is going to take the mantle hopefully, and ah, you can’t rule from the grave.”

Munro added, “And look after his old man!”

“Well I think it will be a while,” Gudinski answered.

“I said I will not be beaten in my lifetime, but I hope you can beat me son, after I’m gone.”

In the wide-ranging interview, which airs again tomorrow night at 8.30pm on Fox Showcase, Gudinski talked about his love of family, America’s obsession with Australian music and his career highlights.
