RADIO presenter Mel Greig has thanked The Project’s Carrie Bickmore on live TV for cancelling an interview with her in the wake of the royal prank.
The 34-year-old opened up about the scandal on the Channel Ten show last night, and revealed Bickmore had pulled the pin on their planned sit-down interview over concerns for her mental health.
In December 2012, Greig and fellow 2Day FM co-host Michael Christian posed as the Queen and Prince Charles as part of a prank to gain information about the Duchess of Cambridge during her stay at St Mary’s Hospital in London, ahead of the birth of Prince George.
The nurse who took the call, Jacintha Saldana, took her life two days later and named the Australian radio presenters in a note she left behind.
At the time, a producer claimed the presenters were “not comfortable” with a follow-up interview because Greig was “too upset”.
Speaking ahead of today’s Troll Free Day, a campaign targeting online bullying, Greig emotionally thanked Bickmore.
“I have to say Carrie, thank you to you,” she said.
“A couple of days after the prank call, The Project was offered an interview and you turned it down because you were worried about my mental health when not many people were.
“I was broken, I was absolutely broken and shouldn’t have been doing interviews. I shouldn’t have been out of bed.”
Greig also explained how the online bullying that followed left her in a severely depressed state.
“Through the whole royal prank, people forgot that I was human, too. I was going through a deep depression.”
Bickmore replied: “We could see that you were struggling ... I was concerned for your mental health.”
The Logie-winning TV presenter added that she was thrilled to see Greig back on track.
“It’s great to see you are back to feeling happy and confident and able to talk about it.”
