Meet the new generation Queer Eye guys

FOR all those lumbersexual guys who need to expand their wardrobe palette, there’s a life guru for that. The Queer Eye guys are back.

Meet the new generation: Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness and Tan France.

IN THE dark ages, also known as 2003, an unusual show debuted on our screens, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Five gay guys went around giving clueless straight men makeovers in every aspect of their lives, from their wardrobes to their homes to matching them with the perfect product for their hair texture. It was cartoony and silly but a lot of fun. It also made a star out of Carson Kressley.

It ran until 2007 and was part of the pop culture movement that normalised gay culture for mainstream audiences.

Earlier this year, a decade since the tszujing stopped, Netflix announced it was bringing back the Queer Eye guys, presumably for all those lumbersexual guys who need to expand their wardrobe palette beyond red, blue and grey.

But it wouldn’t be a reboot without a new generation of the Fab Five. Meet your new gurus.

TAN FRANCE — FASHION

The man behind several clothing brands including Kingdom and State, France spent summers working in his grandfather’s denim factory. He says he won’t be easily categorised and his sartorial senses run towards the “rebellious”.

KARAMO BROWN — CULTURE

An alumni of Real World: Philadelphia, Brown is Queer Eye’s “culture maven”. He’s the founder of HIV awareness organisation 6in10, has worked for Oprah and was invited to the White House (when Obama was still in charge, obviously) for policy discussions on LGBTQ issues. He’s also a single dad to two sons.

BOBBY BERK — INTERIOR DESIGN

If someone’s going to be told to turf their novelty hand chair out to the curb, Berk’s going to be the one to do it, we hope. A fan of the “hip, minimalist” aesthetic, Berk turned his shop assistant jobs into a design career. He was named Best of 2017 in Design by Houzz.

ANTONI POROWSKI — FOOD AND WINE

How’s this for full circle, Porowski once worked as the personal chef for original Queer Eye foodie Ted Allen. He’s worked in restaurants from Montreal to New York and also has a degree in psychology.

JONATHAN VAN NESS — GROOMING

Look at the luscious head of hair, this is a man who knows his way around a great conditioner. A “superstar hairstylist”, Van Ness is best known for his web series, Gay of Thrones.

Queer Eye will premiere on Netflix in February.
