Made in Chelsea's bad boy Spencer Matthews: 'I'm a nice guy'
EVERY soap opera needs a good villain, but Made in Chelsea's resident bad boy, Spencer Matthews, wants his Aussie fans to know that he's actually "a nice guy".
EVERY soap opera needs a good villain, but Made in Chelsea's resident bad boy, Spencer Matthews, wants his Aussie fans to know that he's actually "a nice guy".
The star of the hit UK reality TV show landed Down Under last week alongside his somewhat softer co-star, Oliver Proudlock and the pair spent the weekend running amuck in some of our major cities.
Taking time out from breaking the hearts of thousands of 20-something-year-old Aussie girls, Spence was determined to debunk common belief that he is a bad bloke.
"I come across as the pantomime villain, if you will," the 24-year-old tells news.com.au while reclining with Poudlock on the couches of Kings Cross hotspot, Kit & Caboodle.
"I've come across as a bit of an a*sehole recently, perhaps I've played up to it a little bit too much.
"But all it does is make the episode more interesting… I'm quite a nice person I think, as is my nature."
Matthews, who is renowned for his double-dating, sleeping with mates' girlfriends and general lady-killing ways on Made in Chelsea, admits that he plays up to his dark side simply to keep things interesting.
"Everyone has a dark side, but whether or not you decide to make that public or not is up to you, and I thought it would be more interesting to do so", Matthews adds, comparing himself to reality TV's other scheming scoundrel, Spencer Pratt of The Hills - must be the name.
"I think he's a w*nker, but he's hilarious. He's every reason everyone watches the show. No one cares about what hair product Lauren Conrad uses, it's all about Spencer Pratt."
With season four currently being aired here on Foxtel's LifeStyle YOU, Aussie viewers know all about the infamous 'slap episode' when Millie lands an almighty blow on Spencer's cheek for cheating on girlfriend at the time, Louise.
"Ever since that, my guard is so much better. It's impossible to slap me now, I'm always ready for it."
Given that season five hasn't aired here yet, the Chelsea chaps kept very coy on their current relationship status behind the cameras.
Alas, the adorable Ollie did reveal that he's currently a taken man.
"I have a girlfriend back home, but it's very much a new thing," the 26-year-old designer confirms. (Cue disappointed sigh).
The trendsetters, despite not having been to bed after pulling an all-nighter in Melbourne, looked totally schmick in their designer get-up. But they say fashion, fast cars and polo matches weren't always offered up on a silver platter.
"I was at a desk 14-hours-a-day [before Made in Chelsea]", Spence admits.
"I occasionally got to borrow my brother's fast car," Proudlock adds.
"It is sort of exaggerated, the whole fast car and glitz and glamour. You wouldn't catch me at a polo match in real life."
So, do two of London's most cashed-up socialites believe that money can buy happiness? A resounding "no" all round.
"But it can certainly help."
