Leaked script reveals Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan’s role in Neighbours finale

A leaked Neighbours script from the series finale reveals how Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will farewell the iconic Aussie soap. WARNING: Spoilers.

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to return for Neighbours finale

A month before Neighbours is set to end after nearly 40 years on Aussie screens, a leaked script has revealed just how Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan will appear in the finale.

The latest edition of Gossip newsletter Popb*tch claimed Charlene and Scott, the iconic soapie couple played by real-life ’80s lovebirds Minogue and Donovan, are still going strong since tying the knot more than 30 years ago.

But – spoiler alert – they may not get much of a storyline at all.

Noting the leaked script may well be a “decoy”, the outlet reported Charlene and Scott “bring the curtain down” on the series, pulling up to Ramsay Street in a car and stepping out with the line: “We’re home.”

Minogue teased her involvement in the Neighbours finale on May 1, sharing a close-up photo of a script to her Instagram account. The details visible show that the scene is set outside, and features both Scott and Charlene:

The moment would give millions of diehard Neighbours fans closure on how the young couple fared after their televised wedding on July 1, 1987 was watched by two million Australians.

Their union was an even bigger attraction when it aired in the UK a year later, drawing 19.6 million viewers.

After getting married, the characters left Erinsborough and moved to Brisbane.

Minogue and Donovan, who were dating at the time, were household names in both countries, and each went on to launch music careers in the UK.

The show saw Minogue, who quit Neighbours in June 1988, become the first person to win four Logie Awards in one year and the youngest ever recipient of a Gold Logie.

Neighbours will be axed after 37 years on our screens in June.

The news was confirmed in March after Australian production company Fremantle Media failed to find a new broadcast partner following UK network Channel 5’s decision to withdraw its partnership.

Channel 5 foots the majority of the production bill.

“Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show,” a post to the Neighbours’ Twitter account read.

“To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high. From here on, we are celebrating Neighbours.”

More than 60,000 fans signed a petition to try to save the show after it emerged last month that Channel 5 had pulled out, but it wasn’t enough.

In some good news for fans, a host of the show’s most iconic characters will return to farewell the series along with Charlene and Scott.

Executive producer Jason Herbison confirmed Harold Bishop, played by Ian Smith, would also make a comeback, as well as Olympia Valance’s character Paige Smith, Natalie Bassingthwaighte reprising her role as Izzy Hoyland and Daniel MacPherson as Joel Samuels.

While megastars Guy Pearce, Margot Robbie and Liam Hemsworth, who also got their start on the soap, won’t be returning to Ramsay Street, the full list of familiar faces can be found here.
