SOME of the biggest names in television news including Karl Stefanovic, Sandra Sully and Derryn Hinch have been assembled for a bloody death match.
Brandishing pistols, knives and bats wrapped in barbed wire, the who’s who of broadcast journalism will this week feature in a fight in an abandoned warehouse, with Lee Lin Chin leading the charge and David Marr mediating proceedings.
It’s all for a hilarious comedy skit filmed to celebrate the final episode for the year of SBS 2 news show The Feed, and coordinating 11 stars from the world of news — and different outlets — was no easy task.
“You can imagine all the scheduling conflicts and logistics that had to be dealt for it all to work,” executive producer Nick Hayden said.
“But it did. Who would have thought all these TV personalities would be so eager to beat the living snot out of one another.”
It’s rare for competing networks to come together for a project of this type, but the youthful news show has made great strides in breaking down traditional barriers this year.
Chin’s regular appearances in a range of comedy sketches, from hosting a celebrity gossip show to making a shift to breakfast television, have proven a hit with viewers and online.
But the finale, to air on Thursday night, is the biggest of them all, featuring a string of talent and plenty of hilarious one-liners.
“Seven, first in news, and first in beating down you punk ass bitches,” Hinch quips, his face covered in war paint.
“If there’s going to be a throw down, we’re still the one ... to make you beg for mercy,” Stefanovic shoots back.
He’s joined by Today show colleagues Lisa Wilkinson and Richard Wilkins while Ten Eyewitness News co-host Hugh Riminton is also part of festivities.
The ABC’s Juanita Phillips, Steve Cannane and Annabel Crabb also make an appearance, as well as SBS World News’ Anton Enus.
As they prepare to battle, respected media identity David Marr tells them: “Your legacy will live on in the future of journalism - BuzzFeed articles and Tweets for Mamamia.”
While the stunt was all in good fun, Hayden said elements of the shoot were “a little unsettling” as veterans of the broadcast game relished the chance to take on their rivals.
“Karl Stefanovic’s frenzied look while wielding a hunting knife would haunt anyone’s nightmares and Sandra Sully was way too adept at handling a battle axe.
“Annabel Crabb even brought her own weapons.”
The full segment will air on The Feed on Thursday night at 7.30pm on SBS 2.
