Joel Creasey and Courtney Act talk about Mardi Gras 2021

Comedian Joel Creasey has revealed what really happened when he met music icon Cher at the 2018 Mardi Gras.

Nova radio star Joel Creasey has opened up about his most memorable Mardi Gras celebrity encounter.

In 2018 the comedian came face-to-face with music icon Cher before her performance at the Mardi Gras afterparty.

“I got to interview Cher a few years ago when I was hosting,” Joel told news.com.au. “I ran up to her and I said, ‘Cher, are you enjoying Sydney?’ And she said, ‘Wooo! I’m Cher!’”

Joel laughed as he recalled the story, saying: “That wasn’t the question I asked but it was a way better answer.”

Joel, who co-hosts Nova’s Kate, Tim and Joel, is fronting The 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras coverage which will air live on SBS On Demand this Saturday.

He’ll be joined by drag icon Courtney Act, Studio 10 co-host Narelda Jacobs and comedian Zoë Coombs Marr.

The Mardi Gras parade will be held at the SCG this year instead of Oxford Street due to COVID-19.

“It’s gonna look so different this year,” Courtney told news.com.au. “It’s gonna be like the difference between a drag queen when they’re in drag and out of drag … or the difference between Joel Creasey and Courtney Act.”

“I think it’s going to be fantastic,” Joel added. “For a lot of us it’ll be our first trip to SCG. It’ll definitely be mine.”

Rita Ora, Electric Fields and Montaigne are all set to perform during the parade.

RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE DOWN UNDER GOSS

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under is set to premiere on Stan later this year.

Speaking to news.com.au, Courtney and Joel both said they’ve got nothing to do with the show but Courtney thinks it could be the best season ever.

“Australian drag has got the polish of America and the not taking itself too seriously-ness of the UK,” Courtney said. “Let those two things combine and I think you may have the most ultimate season of Drag Race ever.”

Stan today announced that comedian Rhys Nicholson will be the third judge on the upcoming series alongside RuPaul and Michelle Visage.

The identity of the competing queens will be announced at Mardi Gras on Saturday.

COURTNEY’S NEW PODCAST

Courtney recently launched a new podcast called Brenda, Call Me! with the fourth episode set to drop tomorrow.

“It’s a podcast with my BFF, Vanity, who is my drag sister, and we’ve been friends for 20 years,” Courtney told news.com.au.

“We just always call each other ‘Brenda’. Wherever we are in the world, I will just text Vanity, ‘Brenda, call me,’ and we will call each other.”

Courtney said they started calling each other ‘Brenda’ after watching an old Kirstie Alley movie.

New episodes of the Nova Podcast Brenda, Call Me! drop each Thursday.
