What happened to hunky MacGyver aka Richard Dean Anderson?

WITH the MacGyver reboot set to air in the US next week, let’s take a look at what the original MacGyver is doing with his time. He certainly looks different.

WITH the new MacGyver reboot set to premiere in the US next week, we thought we would take a look at what Richard Dean Anderson, the star who made MacGyver must-see TV in the 80s and 90s, is up to now.

Anderson started his career in 1980 with a role on soap General Hospital before guest roles on The Facts of Life and The Love Boat.

However it was his role as Angus MacGyver, a secret agent with an ability to escape from anything, that made him a star and the object of affection for many while the series ran from 1985-1992.

The Sun reports that nowadays Anderson, 66, looks nothing like the 80s heart-throb he once was.

After MacGyver ended in 1992, the actor went on to make several films which failed to break the box office, before returning to TV to star in Stargate SG-1 from 1997 to 2005.

He also produced the hit series.

The TV show was based on the Stargate movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.

He has never married but has been linked to series of actresses including his MacGyver co-star Teri Hatcher and Lara Flynn Boyle, and he has an 18-year-old daughter named Wylie with ex Apryl Prose.

The actor has refused to have anything to do with the CBS reincarnation of MacGyver.

In May, he released a statement saying he believed the new show was a betrayal of the loyal fans.

“So many people have responded to the attempted ‘reboot’ of the MacGyver franchise, and a lot of people have asked me if I’m going to be in the new show, or am I going to produce it, or, yada.

There was nothing Richard Dean Anderson couldn’t fix as MacGyver but he says the reboot of his hit show is unsalvagable.

“And all I can say is, I’m not considering being a part of a project that has overlooked the insanely LOYAL FANS of the original character and has proceeded without considering how and why they all became and STAYED loyal fans ...

“Yes, I was asked, but no, I won’t be involved in the MacGyver reboot. I have tried to recognise that there really is a balance to be found here. Hence, my loyalty to my fans.”

In the revamped show, Lucas Till steps into MacGyver’s boots. He played Havoc in the X: Men films and a young Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.

He is joined by CSI alum George Eads, who plays MacGyver’s boss Jack Dalton.
