Sandra Sully reveals most embarrassing live TV moment
The veteran Ten newsreader has lifted the lid on the most embarrassing TV moment in her career, admitting she could “barely finish” the news bulletin.
Veteran Ten newsreader Sandra Sully has revealed the most embarrassing on-air moment in her decades behind the desk.
The 10 News First Sydney and 10 News First Queensland host opened up to news.com.au podcast I’ve Got News For You about the infamous moment she erupted into fits of giggles over an unexpected sports story.
In 2007, play was briefly halted at the Australian PGA Tour in Coolum after a kangaroo hopped onto the course and started playing with its testicles in front of South African golfer Rory Sabbatini.
Ten’s sports team decided to run the footage, but deliberately kept Sully in the dark about what was coming up.
“I would throw to sport and they always had a ‘play of the day’ and I generally got a chance to look at it, and for whatever reason, I was busy and they deliberately didn’t let me see it – they didn’t put it in the rundown,” she told host Andrew Bucklow.
“It was international coverage, with the kangaroo, and the team at Sports Tonight put music to it with bells, ‘ding dong, ding dong’ … And I wasn’t expecting it. I could barely finish the bulletin.”
In the hilarious footage, Sully could be seen in fits of laughter as the camera cut back to her at the newsdesk alongside sports presenter Brad McEwan.

Sully added that situations like that happened “so many times”, and that with the nature of the job, “you’ve got to have a sense of humour” about it.
Despite the fact she’s been reading the news for well over 20 years, Sully also admitted on IGNFY that she still gets a little jolt of nerves before every bulletin.
“It’s not extreme nerves, but there’s always a moment with about 10 seconds to go (before the show starts) that, you know, there’s a mental register,” she said.
“You’re on a tightrope, and anything can go wrong. It’s live television.”
