Jade Goody told she has cancer on TV

Fans of late British reality TV star Jade Goody were left sickened by footage of her receiving the devastating news she had cancer while cameras rolled on a Big Brother spin-off.

A documentary called Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain aired on Channel 4 in the UK and screened footage of her Goody being given the cancer diagnosis on India’s Bigg Boss in 2008. It never aired on TV at the time it was filmed.

Goody, who died in 2009, was horrified when she was told the emotional phone call was recorded by producers.

“I had no idea that that conversation was being filmed … it was not right,” Goody said at the time.

And viewers in the UK agreed after watching the documentary which aired earlier this week.

One fumed: “Wow I can’t believe she was told she had cancer on a reality tv show … f***ing hell.”

Another wrote: “Whatever you think about #JadeGoody being told you’ve got cancer on live TV was wrong. Reality television has a lot to answer for.”

One other said: “This is horrendous. The vultures trying to get the money shot and exploit a woman slowly dying.”

Goody flew to India to appear on the Indian Big Brother in a bid to repair her image in the wake of a race row with actress Shilpa Shetty in the UK series the previous year.

She had been on the show for little more than a day when she was given the heartbreaking news about her health by a doctor.

In scenes aired in the documentary, the mum-of-two was seen wiping tears from her eyes after being given the brutal diagnosis on camera.

Subtitles show her being told: “Jade, you’re going to be OK.”

Listening down the line from the UK via a mobile phone, she was heard replying: “Someone’s not lying to me or playing a joke?”

Goody emerged from the “confession room” shell-shocked and was comforted by her waiting housemates.

It was left to one of the men to break the news to the others that Goody had been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The former dental nurse immediately quit the show and returned home to the UK.

In her final days she married boyfriend Jack Tweed on February 22, 2009.

Exactly one month later, Goody passed away at age 27 with her mother and husband by her side.

Gordon Brown, who was the British prime minister at the time, said: “She was a courageous woman both in life and death and the whole country has admired her determination to provide a bright future for her children.”
