Courteney Cox has opened up about her devastating real-life heartbreak during season eight, admitting it was “terrible having to be funny”.
Courteney Cox admits it was “terrible having to be funny” while filming Friends after suffering a miscarriage.
The 55-year-old actress, who played Monica Geller in the hit sitcom, says she found filming character Rachel Green’s birth scenes particularly difficult, reports The Sun.
Speaking in an interview for NBC in 2004, she explained: “I remember one time I just had a miscarriage and Rachel (played by Jennifer Aniston) was giving birth.
“It was like that same time. Oh my God, it was terrible having to be funny.”
After marrying David Arquette in 1999, Cox had seven miscarriages caused by antibodies that attacked the foetus.
She was later diagnosed with a MTHFR gene mutation that raises the risk of miscarriage-causing blood clots.
After two rounds of IVF she welcomed her daughter Coco, now 15, in 2004, just before her 40th birthday.
Cox explained: “Well, it was really weird because everyone in my family has kids. I mean, they pop out like it’s nobody’s business.
“No one in my family has a problem. So to me, I just thought this would not be a problem at all.
“I get pregnant pretty easily, but I have a hard time keeping them.
“So now I decided to do in vitro and I did that twice. And then, give myself shots of heparin everyday — that’s a blood thinner. Take a baby aspirin.”
The former Friends actress has since starred in a series called Nine Months with Courteney Cox, where she followed pregnant mums on their journey.
Cox shares Coco with her ex-husband of 11 years Arquette.
The Hollywood star is now with Irish Snow Patrol rocker Johnny McDaid.
The handsome pair have been dating since 2013 after being introduced by Ed Sheeran.
