Brooke Shields recalls explosive fight with ex-husband Andre Agassi over her ‘Friends’ cameo

The actress recalls the terrifying incident which saw the tennis star smash all his trophies after she appeared in flirty scene on the popular sitcom.

Brooke Shields has opened up about her brief marriage to tennis superstar Andre Agassi, who she recalls was not supportive of her cameo on the hit sitcom, Friends.

In a new interview with The New Yorker, the 57-year-old actress claimed things became volatile between the pair when the pro-athlete smashed all his trophies after watching her on the show in 1996, on which she played Joey Tribbiani’s (Matt LeBlanc) love interest, Erika.

In the scene that allegedly had Agassi fired up, Shields was seen on a date with Joey before manically licking his finger at a restaurant and exposing herself as his stalker.

“In the scene, I’m supposed to lick Joey’s fingers, because they’re the hands of a genius, and I want to devour them, and I’m a nut,” Shields recalled.

“Andre was in the audience supporting me, and he stormed out. He said, ‘Everybody’s making fun of me. You made a fool of me by that behaviour.’ I’m, like, ‘It’s comedy! What is the matter with you?’”

It was later that night Shields said Agassi, now 52, broke all his trophies over the incident because she said he was humiliated. It wasn’t until years later that the Blue Lagoon alum learnt he was using the drug crystal meth at the time.

“So that irrational behaviour I’m sure had something to do with that,” she said.

In her 2014 memoir There Was a Little Girl, Shields recalled the moment Agassi told her the extent of his drug use.

“He explained to me that for the first whole part of our relationship, he had been addicted to crystal meth,” she wrote. “I was the one who had supported him unconditionally when he told me that he was basically bald and had been wearing hairpieces most of his adult life. Why should this have been any different?”

The couple first met in 1993 after being introduced at a tennis match, and in 1997 they went on to marry in a beautiful coastal ceremony in Monterey, California. Sadly, two years after tying the knot, the couple called it quits, but Shields knew very early on that they were not a match.

“It hit me all of a sudden – I knew I had made a mistake,” she wrote in her memoir. “For the next two years we saw very little of each other. I was working on my show, Suddenly Susan, and he was playing at various tournaments.

“He alienated me when he lost and was on to the next tournament after he won. We were drifting apart.”

Agassi went on to marry fellow tennis champion Steffi Graf in 2001, and they now share two children: son Jaden, 21, and daughter Jaz, 19.

That same year, Shields married director Chris Henchy, who is the father of her daughters: Rowan, 19, and Grier, 16.
