First Game of Thrones season six poster features ... Jon Snow?

SPOILER ALERT. Game of Thrones has released its first promotional poster for season six, and it features someone we definitely didn’t expect to see.

Game Of Thrones: Why [SPOILER] isn't dead

WARNING: This story is dark and full of spoilers. If you aren’t up to date with Game of Thrones, read no further.

Has Game of Thrones tricked us again?

The hit HBO show has shared its first promo for season six on social media, and it features a character who is supposed to be, well, dead.

Yep, that’s Jon Snow, who became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch in the middle of season five before his own men knifed him. The season ended with a shot of him looking pretty damn dead.

The teaser — dark, brooding and bloody — has fans debating the same old thing all over again: Is Snow really dead, or isn’t he? Could he be resurrected?

Kit Harington has certainly been pushing the “Jon’s dead for good” line very hard.

“I’ve had to watch what I say, but it’s a big moment, it’s a beautiful ending, and it’s how I wanted to go,” the heart-throb told New York Magazine. “Jon dies. It’s final. He’s dead.”

“My one regret is that I never got to be mopey enough.”
“My one regret is that I never got to be mopey enough.”

While the show’s producer Dan Weiss has also denied a return for the bastard of Winterfell (“Dead is dead”), author George R.R. Martin has not been so definitive.

“If there’s one thing we know in A Song of Ice and Fire, it’s that death is not necessarily permanent,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

We had our say on the matter right after the finale. Our optimistic side thinks the show’s writers have been dropping clues for a while. Consider:

1. Way back in season three, Arya’s storyline introduced us to the characters Thoros and Beric. Thoros was a Red Priest, like Melisandre, and he was shown bringing Beric back from the dead. Upshot: Red Priests can revive people;

2. Melisandre returned to Castle Black moments before Jon was murdered;

3. A good chunk of time in season five was spent exploring Melisandre’s fascination with Jon. If he’s dead for good, that would all be wasted screentime.

So, the general consensus among fans is that Melisandre is likely to resurrect Jon. It makes sense, but nothing is ever certain with this show.

We know just one thing for sure: Game of Thrones season six will to return to the small screen in April next year. That’s a long time to wait for answers, isn’t it?
