It’s set to be the most scandalous season of The Crown and after a two year wait, royal fans are about to get the next instalment of the hit Netflix drama.
Trailers have been dropping with lots of tantalising clues on what’s ahead — Prince Charles grappling with his role in the royal family, Princess Margaret’s difficult relationship with her sister the Queen and an attractive young woman lounging in a bath. Smoking.
Here’s everything we know about The Crown season three so far:
WHEN WILL SEASON THREE BE RELEASED?
Netflix have announced the official release date for The Crown: November 17, 2019. In Australia, the full series will be available for streaming from 7pm on Sunday night, which means no waiting for episodes to drop each week.

Olivia Colman, who takes over from Claire Foy as the Queen, told Good Morning America in February: “We’ve just finished season three a week ago, and when I go back I’ve got to do some reshoots. We start again with season four in August.”

WHEN DOES SEASON THREE TAKE PLACE?
Netflix all but confirmed when the next season of The Crown would be set after it announced Jason Watkins would play Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who was in office from 1964-1970 and 1974-1976.
A statement from producers later confirmed season three would cover 1963 to 1977, Town and Country reported.

Trailers show the season will include the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Day, which took place in 1977 and the miner’s strikes in 1972 and 1974 during the Three-Day Week, when electricity was rationed to three days a week.
There’s plenty of other fodder from this period thanks to the very public breakdown of Princess Margaret’s marriage to Lord Snowdon, the attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne, and Prince Charles’ 1969 investiture ceremony where he became the Prince of Wales.
Other major plots are expected to include Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales and the Aberfan disaster in Wales in 1966, when 144 people died.
Last October, Colman was seen filming a recreation of this sad incident in British history.

WHO IS PART OF THE CAST?
— Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II
— Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip
Helena Bonham Carter has taken over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Ben Daniels has stepped in from Matthew Goode as her husband Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon
Prince Charles, grown up and finally free of his hated Scottish boarding school, is played by Josh O’Connor, who is tipped to be the breakout star of the third season.
He has admitted portraying Prince Charles was no easy feat.
Speaking toES Magazine, the 29-year-old actor said it was “impossible” to replicate the famously austere royal because “none of us know who he is”
But he had mastered the royal’s famous gait and thinks his ears may also have helped get him the part.
“I did think immediately,” he said, gesturing to his ears during the interview with ES Magazine. “Who’s going to play Charles? I don’t know anyone my age who’s got these. They’re not huge, but they stick out.”
The early days of Charles’ relationship with the then Camilla Shand (Emerald Fennell) is also covered, with Charles being warned in one scene “never turn your back on true love”.
A very sassy Princess Anne will be played by Erin Doherty.

WILL SEASON THREE FEATURE DIANA AND CAMILLA?
Sorry Diana fans, but the late Princess of Wales won’t feature until The Crown season four, which was filmed back-to-back after season three.
“Diana’s not in this season,” casting director Nine Gold told Vanity Fair. “When we do get to her, that is going to be pretty interesting.”
Camilla and Charles’ early relationship will feature, with Fennell spotted filming scenes in January.
Former X-Files star Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher will also not make an appearance until season 4, but Colman told Entertainment Weekly it would be worth the wait.
“She’s amazing,” Colman said.
“The moment she opened her mouth in the read-through, you could feel everyone wanting to do a little silent ‘Yay!’ Because she was so brilliant.”
