BITCHY private schoolgirl Ja'mie King proved she's still one of the most popular teens in school, drawing just under a million viewers for the ABC last night.

The debut episode of Chris Lilley's latest series Ja'mie: Private School Girl was the fifth most watched show of the night and the highest rated scripted series.

Across the five city metro areas, 924,000 people were educated on the proper use of the terms "quiche" and "box gap", which trended on Twitter last night.

Can't wait for next week's episode of #PrivateSchoolGirl it's gonna be so quiche ;) !

Although the ratings for the show are under the 1.368 million who tuned in for the launch of Lilley's previous series Angry Boys in 2011 and the 1.22 million for Summer Heights High in 2007, it's still a very healthy debut in the current environment, with many more viewers expected to catch up with the show on iView.

Gruen Planet, with 1,070,000 viewers, was the only program outside of the news and current affairs stalwarts to beat it.

Elsewhere the big new American series the networks' had hoped would shore up their midweek schedules are all falling fast with Seven's Marvel's Agents of SHIELD shedding more than 150,000 viewers from the previous week down to 731,000 and tenth place.

Nine's Hostages, starring Australia's Toni Collette, also declined sharply from an already low 650,000 to 556,000 for 17th place, while Ten's 22 part drama series Wonderland figure didn't even cross the 500,000 mark.

However The Bachelor Australia is showing some signs of life, up to 676,000 viewers, while Slideshow is sliding in the other direction down to 674,000.
