Three frontrunners in race to be Carrie Bickmore’s The Project replacement

A panellist on The Project has waded in to who will replace Carrie Bickmore, dropping names of the three contenders who are in the race.

Host announces she is leaving The Project

The clock is ticking on Carrie Bickmore’s final episode of The Project, with a replacement for the TV host yet to be announced.

Bickmore, 41, announced in October she’d be wrapping up on the Ten current affairs program after 13 years, with her final show to be November 30.

The network is yet to reveal who will replace the popular TV host, but regular Project panellist Kate Langbroek – who is currently hosting Nine’s new show My Mum, Your Dad – has dropped the names of three frontrunners.

Langbroek ruled out herself from the race, suggesting the role will either go to Chrissie Swan, Georgie Tunny or Studio 10’s Sarah Harris, which she revealed on news.com.au’s I’ve Got News For You podcast.

“That’s a big job, and it’ll be fascinating to see in what direction the show goes,” Langbroek said.

“Everyone’s racking their brains to think of the perfect person and it’s really hard to replace Carrie, because she’s got a very broad skill set in that she’s a journalist, but she’s also into pop culture, and she’s topical, and she looks beautiful and she engages at the desk … That’s very hard to find someone who can live in all those areas.”

When prompted by podcast host Andrew Bucklow with Swan, Tunny and Harris’ names, Langbroek replied: “Well, I actually think there’s probably a good chance of it being one of those three.”

Swan, 49, filled in for Bickmore during her UK sabbatical earlier this year, as did 31-year-old Tunny, who joined The Project desk full-time as a reporter and fill-in host in September.

On the other side of the coin, it would certainly be a refreshing change if Harris, 41, were to land the gig, after co-hosting mid-morning program Studio 10 for nine years.

While she has appeared on The Project in a hosting capacity before, Harris has spent most of her stint with Ten on the morning show.

Meanwhile, Bickmore is yet to announce what she plans to tackle next. There were rumours she would be tapped to replace Tracy Grimshaw on A Current Affair over on rival network, Channel 9.

However, as part of her on-air farewell monologue last month, Bickmore claimed she was looking forward to “more family dinners and watching the show with my PJs on and a wine in hand”.

This prompted a report in The Daily Telegraph that claimed Bickmore could have her eyes set on breakfast TV, with speculation she might join Karl Stefanovic on the Today show instead of Allison Langdon, who is now the firm frontrunner to take over ACA hosting duties.

Earlier, the mother-of-three took to Instagram to share some more thoughts on her Project resignation, adding that when she first started on the show her eldest son Ollie was a one-year-old. He’s now 15, and she’s since welcomed two more children, Evie and Adelaide.

“I’m gonna miss my best mates on the desk, the job itself which is just so incredibly fulfilling, our wonderful viewers who’ve been on the journey over the last 13 years,” she said.

“It’s no secret that this show has become a second home for me, and I can’t be more thankful to everyone that has been involved on and off screen.

“I’m leaving at a time that I’m so happy to be here, which feels so confusing, but I just know it’s time; I know it’s right.”

Bickmore will continue to co-host Hit Network’s Carrie & Tommy with Tommy Little.

Meanwhile, My Mum, Your Dad continues tonight on Channel 9 at 7.30pm
