The Project: Carrie Bickmore has slammed contradictory advice on ‘social distancing’

Carrie Bickmore has urged leaders to clarify what is actually required to responsibly practice “social distancing” in an impassioned plea on The Project.

Carrie Bickmore has echoed the resounding sentiment of confused Australians on The Project on Tuesday night, airing her frustrations amid uncertainty over what we can and cannot do while “social distancing”.

Speaking passionately after a segment explaining why social distancing is imperative to slow the spread of coronavirus, the Gold Logie winner admitted she still doesn’t quite know what’s “allowed” and what isn’t.

Responding to a question by panellist Monty Dimond, who appeared via video link, Bickmore said we need more direction in terms of what activities we shouldn’t be doing, especially with young children.

“I've been struggling not really knowing what I should and shouldn't do,” Dimond admitted to the panel.

“Like this morning, I went out and took my boys for a ride and I grabbed a coffee and it was next to a park and I'm like, should I be grabbing this coffee, should the boys be going to the park, even though no-one else was there?,” she asked.

Relating to the feeling of confusion, Bickmore responded: “I feel like there is a lot of grey area right now and it isn't helpful,” she said, before launching into an impassioned plea for greater leadership.

“We need full lists of what we can and can't do.”

“Nobody has navigated this world and we don't know what we are doing and we want to be socially responsible.

“Be clear, lead us and tell us what you want us doing, and we will follow suit but leaving it up to us to guess is really hard,” she told the panel, raising her arms in frustration.

“You are asking people to make decisions and we are not qualified to make them,” she concluded, prompting Waleed to tell her to “just not do the thing that you are thinking about”.

“But if you have young children you need to get out at some point otherwise I'm going to go crazy,” the mother-of-three said.

“So is taking them out for 10 minutes socially irresponsible or is that OK? I feel like the whole just don't do it if you are not sure is not as easy – it is easier said than done,” she said.

“But we are all at a difficult time,” Waleed argued.

“You are going to need to do difficult things. It’s going to be difficult for all of us.”

The panel’s debate came just hours before the cabinet were due to meet to discuss “stage two” of slowing the spread.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday night met with state and territory leaders, with strict new guidelines for the public to follow.

These could include timed supermarket visits, transport restrictions and alternate working hours as more offices are instructed to close, according to experts.

Australians may even face restrictions on hosting social gatherings in their own homes, as the nation moves towards a British-style shutdown that could last months.

The Project airs Sunday – Friday at 6.30 on Channel 10.
