Channel 7 Queensland presenter Liz Cantor defects to Network Ten
Longtime Queensland weather presenter Liz Cantor has announced she’s leaving 7News to join a rival network.
Popular weather presenter Liz Cantor is jumping ship to rival network Channel 10 after two decades affiliated with Seven.
The Gold Coast TV star announced she’s set to join axed Channel 7 anchor Sharyn Ghidella to front a new-look 10 News First Queensland from Monday.
Cantor, 41, revealed the surprising news to Courier Mail Thursday, in which she joked, “I was a seven, now I’m a ten.”
Cantor’s defect to Ten, where she’ll present the state’s forecast, comes as the network has been scooping up Seven talent, including Ghidella, who was brutally let go in July after 17 years at the Brisbane bureau.
In a lengthy statement posted on her Facebook page, Ghidella made a pointed comment about the raft of changes Seven, including introducing a comedy segment and horoscope report to its national news offering.
“I’m also not one to have my evening news served up with humour and horoscopes either, so, to be honest, it is time to go,” Ghidella wrote.
Over at Ten, the network has been heavily investing in local news, with Cantor and Ghidella’s debut for 10 News First Queensland set to broadcast from the network’s Brisbane studios for the first time since 2020, when it began airing from Sydney with Sandra Sully as anchor.
“Thank you [Ten] for supporting local news,” Cantor added in an Instagram post.
“A return of this bulletin on the ground in Queensland is such a win for free to air telly and also the state.”
It comes almost 20 years after Cantor first shot to notoriety aged 22 when she won Seven’s reality TV show The Mole.
She went on to enjoy a lengthy career presenting for the broadcaster as part of their news bulletins and lifestyle shows, including Creek to Coast and Weekender.
While Ghidella has completely cut ties with Seven, Cantor will continue her roles presenting the aforementioned lifestyle shows.
“Times are changing, and I believe in working together rather than against each other,” Cantor continued to Courier Mail.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to stay on with these shows while taking on this exciting new role with 10 News First Queensland.”
Meanwhile, executive editor of 10 News First Queensland Erin Edwards was delighted to welcome Cantor to their news lineup.
“Liz knows the forecast is as important for families at the beach as it is for farmers in the bush. We are thrilled to share her decades of knowledge with our viewers,” Edwards said.
