Comedian Aaron Chen trolls news.com.au in hilarious interview

Aaron Chen is one of Australia’s most popular stand-up comedians, but he’s not exactly easy to interview.

Aaron Chen’s hilariously odd interview

When you interview a celebrity, you hope they give you an amazing quote that you can use as a headline to entice people to read your article.

Comedian Aaron Chen did not give me any amazing quotes when I spoke to him recently, but he was still one of my favourite interviews of the year.

For background, I am a huge fan of Chen’s.

I’ve attended several of his sold out stand-up shows and love his appearances on Have You Been Paying Attention, Thank God You’re Here and Fisk.

So when Channel 10 offered me a chat with Chen to promote his upcoming appearance on season three of Taskmaster (premiering September 24 at 7.30pm on Ten), I jumped at the chance.

Having never interviewed Chen before, I wasn’t sure if he’d give me ‘straight’ answers or if he’d stick to his comedy persona and serve up deadpan, humorous answers.

It took just 20 seconds to realise it was the latter.

“Why did you say yes to appearing on this show (Taskmaster Australia)?” I asked at the top of the interview.

“Because it felt like the right decision … I’m a good friend of (Taskmaster co-host) Tom Cashman and I owed him four favours,” Chen replied straight-faced.

Now that might not seem funny in print, but as you can see in the video above, Chen had me giggling like a schoolgirl throughout the interview.

During the chat we discussed if Taskmaster host Tom Gleeson played favourites on the set of the show, we spoke about his brief interaction with Anthony Albanese, and Chen’s relocation to New York to try and crack the US comedy scene.

“How do American audiences differ from Australian stand-up audiences?” I asked him.

“A lot of them carry weapons … so it’s a lot more high stakes here,” he replied.

If Chen is this funny in a promo interview, I can’t wait to see what he’s like on season three of Taskmaster when it kicks off on Ten on Tuesday night.
