Channel 7 Good Friday Appeal coverage shows hilarious name

IT’S one of the biggest charity days of the year, with Channel 7 covering it live. How did they let this slip on air?

Good Friday Appeal: Thank you Victoria!

IT’S one of those names we have all joked about, but on TV’s biggest telethon day of the year, Channel 7 managed to let it slip on air.

One generous donor, Hugh G. Rection put up over $32 of his hard earned cash to the cause, with his name rising on screen for all to see.

The Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal pulled in more than $17.1 million from generous donors in a record-breaking effort that will fund vital research and facilities.

More than 80,000 people packed into the Good Friday Appeal headquarters at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday, breaking last year’s record of 60,000 visitors.

The fundraising effort eclipsed last year’s total of $16.8 million.

The Kids Day Out zone was a whirlwind of activity all day long — from the Auskick zone and indoor skate rink to Bollywood stage and the arts fair — and a host of colourful characters rattled tins for the cause, including Star Wars Stormtroopers and Disney princesses.

At least 1500 volunteers gave their time at the event, many of them working as money counters as thousands of tins came in throughout the day from the intrepid highway collectors.

Among them was veteran counter Toni Pedder, who marked 50 years volunteering for the Good Friday Appeal.

“The gratification of being able to feel like I’m really helping — that’s what keeps me coming back,” Ms Pedder said.

It was Good Friday Appeal director Anne Randall’s first time managing the event, and she was amazed by the public show of support.

“It’s a wonderful feeling, and there’s such wonderful energy,” Mrs Randall said.

“I know it’s big, because I’ve watched it on TV enough times to know that, but to actually be here is just extraordinary.”
