Big Brother fans outraged after Tahan calls fellow housemate Mikkayla 'racist'
ONE Big Brother contestant waded into dangerous waters last night, with Tahan accusing fellow housemate Mikkayla of being "racist".
ONE Big Brother contestant waded into dangerous waters last night, with Tahan accusing fellow housemate Mikkayla of being "racist". The comment has been met with plenty of backlash on social media.
Tahan - who is part-Aboriginal, part-Malaysian - took to the diary room to vent about South Korean-born Mikkayla's "racist" attitude.
"I think she is the most racist person I know", the 24-year-old confided in Big Brother.
"Love her to death, but she is very racist and coming from someone who myself, I am very multicultural, I have a number of different backgrounds, I embrace and respect all of my cultural backgrounds, whereas she takes the p*** out of them and makes fun of them and it's really something that irritates me."
Viewers took to social media during the episode to defend Mikkayla, turning on Tahan and making comments about her own behaviour inside the house.
@BBAU9 since when is making fun of yourself racist? IMake fun of my own heritage all the time I'm not racist I like Tahan but that was silly
Tahan claims someone is racist yet she said she wishes everyone of all cultures spoke English hahaha go home idiot #BBAU @BBAU9
It's called coping not racism tahan. That's just how she copes with racism and I doubt you have never been racist @BBAU9 #bbau
Oh Tahan shut up. U need to go! @BBAU9 she's so racist but I love her bla bla bla bla bla @BBAU9
Tahan's comment was in response to Mikkayla frequently adopting foreign accents when talking to other housemates.
Heidi Anderson, who was evicted on Monday night, came to Tahan's defence this morning when contacted by news.com.au, saying that the two are actually good friends and Tahan didn't mean to intentionally offend Mikkayla.
"The thing about Tahan is that she doesn't sugar-coat anything she says and I don't think sometimes she realises she can be quite offensive", she said.
"Mikkayla was just putting on an accent and having fun with it and Tahan has overreacted but because of the environment that you're in it seems a lot worse."
Anderson added that housemates go into the diary room to confide in Big Brother but forget that the nation is also tuning in.
"When you go in there you go in and trust Big Brother ... you just don't think when you're in there about how people are going to react to things.
"90 per cent of the time you are completely unaware."
