The new 90210 reboot has finally landed in Australia — but fans of the original series have been left underwhelmed by the “weird” format.

The new 90210 reboot has been skewered on social media, with viewers branding it “cringy” and “weird”.

The six-part BH90210 series, which premiered on Ten on Tuesday night, is set up as a show within a show, featuring the original cast “reuniting” for a fan convention in Las Vegas.

Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris all make their return to the screen but with largely fictional post-show lives. Weirdly, even their partners’ names are fake.

It’s a format that worked for the likes of Matt Le Blanc in Episodes and Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm — but based on the reaction on social media, it hasn’t quite landed for 90210.

In fact, many fans of the original series were left underwhelmed and “confused” by the reboot.

However, there were at least some fans who enjoyed the new series.

In a touching scene, the first episode featured a tribute to original cast member Luke Perry, who died in March at the age of 52 after suffering a stroke.

BH90210 airs Tuesdays at 8.30pm on Ten.
