An Australian cabaret star has been rushed to hospital after shattering his foot and suffering a spinal injury during a performance where he fell four metres off the stage.

On Thursday night AEST, accordion player ‘Hans’, an Adelaide resident whose real name is Matt Gilbertson, was performing on a cruise ship off the coast of Turkey.

Mr Gilbertson fell from a great height from the stage into the orchestra pit below.

He was airlifted from Turkey to London to undergo surgery.

Writing on social media, Mr Gilbertson said “It‘s resulted in a shattered foot and some slight spinal damage.

“At this stage, the spine looks manageable but I will require extensive surgery on my right foot.

“Obviously not an ideal situation, but it could have been much, much worse.”

He also shared video that showed people on the ship cheering for him as he was loaded into a Turkish ambulance, lights flashing.

Mr Gilbertson has unsurprisingly pulled out of an upcoming show in Australia, saying he “has regretfully had to withdraw” from the Broken Heel Festival in NSW’s Broken Hill in September

“Sadly, this means I will not be able to perform at Broken Heel next week, and yes I’m aware of the irony in that. I was so looking forward to spending the weekend with you all,” the post said.

“Future shows are currently on stand by until we have more of an idea of my recovery plan.”

Mr Gilbertson also thanked the cruise ship audience for handling the shocking situation well.

“I want to thank everyone in the Atlantis audience on Thursday night for being so understanding when this occurred and to those who have already sent very kind messages of support,” he added.

News.com.au has contacted Mr Gilbertson’s agency, Watercooler Talent, for further comment.

The local cabaret artist shot to international fame during his audition on America’s Got Talent and was unanimously voted through to the next round.
