AN AUSSIE comedian is well on his way to the big time after performing on Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show.

Nick Cody, 29, was spotted by one of O’Brien’s talent scouts as he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

With just a few weeks to prepare for his appearance, Cody returned to Australia to work on his routine.

“You send through some options [to the producers] and they come back with notes,” he said about his material.

“They’re really good about what’s going to work in America and what’s a good bit for that show.”

So what’s the main difference between American comedy crowds and Aussie ones?

“Americans will applaud a point,” Cody said.

“If you get a good point out in the set-up to a joke, they’ll applaud the point even before you get to the punchline. Australians are a bit more like, ‘Yeah good point champ, but fu**ing just get to the funny bit’.”

Once Cody and the producers agreed on a few options for his material, he started practising ... hard.

“I just went to different comedy clubs and rooms every night for a few weeks doing different spots and just tried to work on it,” he said.

On Sunday, Cody and his manager flew to Los Angeles where he waited nervously for his big TV appearance on Tuesday night.

“A car picked us up and when I arrived they took me into wardrobe,” Cody said.

“I got called in to do a sound check and a run-through so I knew where to stand. When the show kicked off I watched Conan’s monologue from the side of stage and then just went backstage and chilled out until it was go time.”

If you’ve ever wondered what the dressing rooms are like behind the scenes of the US talk shows, well, they’re “sick” according to Cody.

“It had a massive TV, a PlayStation 4 with a bunch of games, drinks and some nice food. It was a great place to hang out,” he said.

And then it was time for Cody to take to the stage.

“You want it to be just like a normal gig but obviously it’s a massive deal,” the stand-up comedian said, “as soon as I got the first laugh I was fine, like any gig.”

Cody, who is only the fourth Aussie comedian to perform on the program, didn’t get to meet O’Brien before the show, but the host had a quick chat to the Aussie star right after his performance.

“He thanked me for flying all this way and then he was telling me how he wants to get back to Australia soon,” Cody said, “he was great, a really good dude.”

And Cody was even able to take a few souvenirs home with him.

“The booker got me the cue cards that Conan read off to bring me on stage and I got the little slip that was on the front of my dressing room door,” he said.

Cody’s appearance on Conan comes a few months after the Aussie was asked to appear on a TV special by (arguably) the biggest name in comedy right now.

“Kevin Hart’s starting his own network and he’s got a stand up series on there and I was one of the comedians that was picked to be part of the series,” Cody said.

“He came out the back, shook everyone’s hand, remembered everyone’s name and he was super cool about having a photo.”

Cody will now return to Australia to prepare for his second stand-up special which is being taped at the Enmore Theatre on November 17.
