BEFORE auditioning for the role of his fiancee in the Channel 7 miniseries which aired last night, Rebecca Breeds already had a particularly soft spot for Molly Meldrum.

“I watched Hey Hey religiously every Saturday night like every other single human that I knew,” the actress confessed.

“That was obviously the first influence Molly had on my life.”

The second, said Breeds, came after meeting Meldrum at The Perth Telethon in 2010.

Along with her now husband, Luke Mitchell, Breeds was slightly star struck when she was introduced to the music industry legend. “It was great,” she recalled.

Spotting him by himself in the airport lounge as they awaited a return flight to Sydney, the pair went over to say hello. And to their delight Meldrum invited them to sit down and join him.

“We sat down and had a beer with him in true Molly style and we ended up talking a good part of an hour,” she recalled.

“Luke and I were putting on a charity event for the Sovanapoom Orphanage in Cambodia and we told him all about it, he was really into it.”

“He ended up contributing resources and following through on his word and it was a really big part of that for us.”

Thanks in part to Meldrum’s help, the pair’s Christmas for the Kids event helped raise the $200,000 they were seeking to rebuild the community orphanage.

“We were both young and new to the whole thing and he was so grounding,” she said.

“In such an inflated industry and with such a huge profile for him to be so down to earth, no bull crap was so nice. He’s very wise and real and down to earth, he was a bit of a Yoda.

“He was really kind to us and I had a great experience with him and then a couple of years later I’m playing his fiancee. It was serendipity.”
