$150k for 30 secs? You've got to be kidding! The most expensive TV shows for advertisers in Australia revealed
AD agencies fork out big bucks to woo viewers during ad breaks. But which TV shows command the highest fee for a measly 30-second slot? You might be surprised.
IT'S no secret advertising agencies have to fork out the big bucks in order to nab the prime time viewing slots.
But which Aussie TV shows command the highest fee?
Unsurprisingly, reality TV shows draw the largest interest from advertising agencies. Channel 9's The Voice finale earlier this year called for $150,000 for a 30-second spot, an industry insider tells news.com.au.
Fair enough, given that more than 2.3 million viewers tuned in to the much-anticipated finale.
Nabbing the second spot this year was the AFL Grand Final on Channel 7. The epic grudge match between Hawthorn and Freemantle grabbed $135,000 per 30-second spot.
A close third was the NRL Grand Final on Channel 9 at $100,000.
Think that's a lot? Well, the match, during which the Sydney Roosters triumphed over the Manly Sea Eagles, averaged 3.6 million viewers nationally. That's an awful lot of eyeballs on your product.
"Sports tend to be priced a little bit more premium partly because there are the very significant sports rights negotiations," Steve Allen, Chief Executive of Fusion Strategy, told news.com.au.
Producers at Seven are gearing up for a big pay day with the upcoming X Factor grand finale. The singing show is currently the highest-rating show on free-to-air television - X Factor nabbed more than 1.637 million viewers on Monday night - so it's sure to be hot property for hungry agencies.
"I would think around $110,000 to $130,000 for a five city capital spot," Allen said.
"We are within the 10-week run to Christmas when advertising is at its strongest demand. Prices are at their priciest so a big glossy show that rates at number one presently obviously is going to attract premium."
But not everyone will pay top dollar because it's all a negotiation.
"If an advertiser is in tight with Seven it's going to get a very good deal.
"Pricing isn't predatory or differential, pricing is all based on the volume of money and the amount of money that you're giving to one network versus the other."
But it's all pocket change compared to our overseas counterparts.
In the US popular CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory leads the pack on network television, bagging a staggering $US326,260 for a 30-second advertising spot, according to an AdWeek survey.
That's almost $11,000 a second.
The Voice and Modern Family come in at a close second and third, commanding $277,780 and $270,309 respectively. The Simpsons is hot on their heels with $269,824.
Meanwhile, Fox earns $624,940 during NFL games - the highest unit cost of any TV property.
