The Queen, 95, will attend Prince Philip memorial despite health concerns

The Queen will 'try her best' to attend memorial service for Duke of Edinburgh

The Queen will attend Prince Philip’s memorial service today, despite her recent health issues.

Her Majesty has missed a string of recent events and it was feared she would be forced to pull out of the service, which was organised after Covid meant only 30 people could attend her husband’s funeral last year.

The Monarch, 95, was said to be “determined” to lead loved ones gathered at the memorial, and Buckingham Palace confirmed she would attend the service at Westminster Abbey today.

The Queen has been using a walking stick in the last six months and she recently fought off a bout of Covid.

She also sprained her back and remarked that she was having difficulty getting around.

Senior royals will join her at the service, including Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton, and Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex.

Prince Andrew will also attend, in his first royal outing since paying out millions to settle a civil sexual assault case.

But Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their children will not attend after the Duke of Sussex claimed his and his family’s safety could not be guaranteed in the UK.

Royals from around the world will also be in attendance, as will British prime minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie.

Prince Philip died aged 99 in April last year.

Covid restrictions in the UK at the time meant only 30 close family members and friends were able to attend, instead of the thousands of digintaries that would have been expected.

The Queen sat on her own at the funeral, dressed in black, in a picture that defined the stoicism she has embodied during her reign.
