Seven things you never knew about Game of Thrones
WHAT was Emilia Clarke REALLY eating when her character ate a horse’s heart and which star used to appear in adult films? Here are seven surprising facts. Potential spoiler warning.
IT’S one of the most popular shows on TV with a fanatical fan base that will undoubtedly roll their eyes and say, “But I already knew all these facts”.
But hopefully, just hopefully, there are some fans of the show out there who haven’t spent hours researching everything there is to know about the fantasy drama and who will therefore enjoy these facts, which were compiled by Alltime10s:
Hopefully.
(Potential spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen any GoT.)
1. King’s Landing is a real place:
The exterior shots are filmed in the seaside castle-town of Dubrovnik in Croatia. The town is surrounded by a huge wall which is almost two kilometres long and dates back to the 14th century.
2. Sexposition:
The show is responsible for coining the term ‘sexposition’ which means, according to the Financial Times, “keeping viewers hooked by combining complex plot exposition with explicit sexual goings-on”.
So basically, it’s how the characters always have deep conversations when they’re getting it off with prostitutes that they later kill.
3. The throne:
The famous iron throne is almost two and a half metres tall and took more than two months to build. One of the sword’s in the throne is actually a replica of Gandalf’s glamdring from the Lord of the Rings.
4. Dire wolves existed:
The wolves were an actual species that lived over 10,000 years ago. They had stronger teeth than a grey wolf and it’s believed they could crush bone.
5. Porn parody:
With a show as popular as Game of Thrones, an adult-film version was always going to be made.
The XXX movie is called Game of Bones and it features a throne made from adult toys rather than swords. One of the actors from the TV show, Sibel Kekilli (who plays Shae) was once a porn star called ‘Dilara’.
Once her parents found out about her shady past, they broke off all contact with her.
6. Bush on a stick:
In the first season there was outrage in the US when a severed head resembling former President George W. Bush was featured in the show.
The show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, revealed in the DVD commentary that, “George Bush’s head appears in a couple of beheading scenes. It’s not a choice. It’s not a political statement. It’s just we had to use whatever heads we had around”. HBO later apologised.
7. Delicious heart:
Remember when Daenerys ate the heart of the horse given to her by Drogo? The heart was actually made from 1.3 kilograms of gummy bears.
The actor, Emilia Clarke, was reportedly covered in so much fake blood for the scene that she got stuck to the toilet seat after filming.
