New range of stamps puts an Aussie twist on Disney birthday
A uniquely Australian take on some classic children’s characters has marked the 100th birthday of one of the world’s biggest entertainment companies.
Some of the world's most beloved characters have received an Aussie makeover in a new set of stamps released by Australia Post to celebrate Disney’s 100th birthday.
Nemo, the clownfish from Finding Nemo, is seen making himself at home in Sydney Harbour while Ariel from The Little Mermaid swaps her kingdom of Atlantica for the Great Barrier Reef.
Kanga and Roo from Winnie the Pooh are shown frolicking in the Red Centre – a slightly more natural habitat than One Hundred Acre Wood.
The collection is made complete with Disney icons Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse sightseeing on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
“We’re delighted to celebrate our favourite Disney characters with a touch of Aussie flair in this latest commemorative stamp collection,” Australia Post Executive General Manager of Retail Catriona Noble said.
“Disney’s official 100-year celebration is on 16 October, and we hope all Australians find their inner-child and celebrate their favourite characters for this special occasion”.
Tara Stone, from Melbourne, said the opportunity to design the stamps was a dream come true.
“Collaborating with two beloved brands like Disney and Australia Post is one of my childhood dreams realised and it makes it an even bigger career and personal highlight for me since it is also Disney’s 100th anniversary,” Ms Stone, a Product Development Manager at The Walt Disney Company Australia & New Zealand, said.
“I am so excited to be able to help bring to life this range of stamps featuring fan-favourite Disney characters while also showcasing the beautiful Australian environment using bold colours and iconic locations.”
As part of the 100th birthday celebrations, earlier this year Disney collaborated with LEGO to bring Cinderella’s Castle to life at Westfield shopping centres around the country.
Disney’s special Magic at Sea cruise ship will also arrive in Australia with sailings from October this year.
